The Commodores were completely locked up through the first 6 innings of Friday’s opener against Wright State at the Nashville Regional. Wright State starter Cam Allen was working a no-hitter when coach Adam Sogard decided to pull him for Warren Hartzell to open the bottom of the seventh.
And the baseball gods were none too pleased.
The very first batter Hartzell faced, Vanderbilt’s Brodie Johnston, went yard to finally crack the scoreboard. Then, in the bottom of the eighth, Mike Mancini homered to center field to score the ‘Dores second run. Moments later, Riley Nelson belted a 2-RBI home run 429 feet down the right field line to take Vanderbilt from down 0-3 to up 4-3.
Sawyer Hawks replaced JD Thompson in the ninth and struck out each of the 3 batters he faced to give Vandy a 4-3 victory.
For the Commodores (43-16), Friday’s come-from-behind win marked their ninth consecutive victory. They’ll face Louisville on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET. The Cardinals defeated ETSU 8-3 earlier on Friday.
For the visitors, “What if?” will be pondered in the uncomfortable aftermath. Allen had 7 strikeouts and 3 walks when he was pulled. He’d thrown 76 pitches through 6 innings. Vandy didn’t get its first base-runner until the top of the fourth, and even he was caught out trying to steal second.

— Goldschmidt Happened (@GoldyHappens) May 31, 2025Allen walked a batter in the bottom of the fifth, but came right back to strike out the next man he faced and end the inning. He hit RJ Austin in the sixth, but followed that up with a quick groundout to strand the runner and end another frame.
Johnston got to Hartzell on the third pitch thrown.
In the eighth, controversy crept in when Nelson’s 2-run shot was first deemed to be foul and then changed to a home run after a meeting of the game’s officials. A furious Sogard called for a challenge, but the call on the field was upheld and Nelson let loose an explosion of emotion in the Vandy dugout.

— SEC Network (@SECNetwork) May 31, 2025Johnston then took 4 balls from Hartzell and Sogard went back to the dugout. Vandy wasn’t able to add any insurance, but it didn’t need to. Hawks authored a 1-2-3 frame to pick up his eighth save of the season. Thompson earned his sixth win after striking out 12 with 5 hits and 3 runs allowed in 8 innings.
Vandy hasn’t lost a game since May 9. Three days prior, they dropped a 5-4 game at Louisville. Now, they have a shot at some revenge.
