Bruno Fernandes among surprise winners as talkSPORT hosts pick Premier League Player of the Season

One name unsurprisingly stood out but it didn’t stop a handful of curveball choices from talkSPORT’s presenters for their Player of the Season.

In the second instalment of our end of season awards, our hosts selected who they thought was the best on ground across the entire Premier League campaign.

If you missed the first part of our awards features, you can see who Jeff Stelling, Andy Townsend and Ally McCoist named in their Teams of the Season here.

Without further ado, here’s who our talkSPORT presenters named as the Player of the Season!

We start with Charlie Baker, who opted for Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch colossus was at his defensive best and kept a league-leading 14 clean sheets as Liverpool went on to win their 20th English top flight title.

“Virgil van Dijk, all day long,” Baker said. “I don’t think Liverpool win the title without him. He’s absolutely solid as a rock.

“You could never, ever imagine that Liverpool side winning the league without him. I sort of think you could without Mohamed Salah.”

Paul Hawksbee went for another Liverpool player, who proved to be the most popular shout.

No prizes for guessing who, given Hawksbee claimed his choice was ‘blindingly obvious’.

    “It’s Mohamed Salah,” Hawksbee said.

“Another fantastic season, played under a bit of a cloud for some of it as well because he didn’t know whether he was staying or going.

“Look, it’s pretty obvious. I can’t really see much beyond him.”

Salah ended the campaign as the Golden Boot and the Playmaker of the Season winner thanks to his remarkable 29 goals and 18 assists.

The 47 goal contributions equalled the record held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole for the most goal involvements in a single Premier League season.

Andy Townsend, Darren Bent and Ally McCoist were all in agreement.

Townsend said: “It has to be Mo Salah, doesn’t it? It’s got to be Mo Salah.

“Just take into account his numbers, his consistency, he plays every week.

“He does everything you need to be a remarkable player and a top player.

“This season, his consistency levels have been really good.

“He has those games when he looks like it’s not quite happening for him. But he’s always able to come back.”

McCoist added: “Mohamed Salah. I thought when I looked at him at the start of the season, he actually looked a little bit leaner. He was never carrying anything. He never had a pick on him.

“But for some reason, I had a look at him and I thought, ‘Dear me, he just looks so toned and refined.’

“His goals and assists have been remarkable.”

Bent conceded he also could have picked Van Dijk, but ultimately there was only one winner.

“Salah’s the obvious one, isn’t it?” Bent said.

“For me, it’d be him or Virgil (Van Dijk). At the back, just a Rolls Royce.

“But I’m going to go with Salah. I think he’s been the one.”

We now go to two left-field shouts, beginning with Andy Jacobs.

“I’m going to go for [Moises] Caicedo,” Jacobs said.

“I think he’s the best defensive midfielder in the league.

“He’s had a brilliant season. In a difficult season for Chelsea, he’s been consistent right the way through.”

In his second season at Stamford Bridge, Caicedo looked far more at home and finished the campaign with the third-most tackles among midfielders in the Premier League.

The Ecuadorian also made the equal second-most interceptions among midfielders with a tally of 49, highlighting his importance at breaking up play for Chelsea.

As for Andy Goldstein, his choice is certainly divisive but not all that surprising given he is a passionate Manchester United supporter.

“I’m going for Bruno Fernandes,” Goldstein said.

“He’s dragged them into the Europa League final. Something Martin Odegaard’s not done.

“I think he’s been an unbelievable player.”
