Serie A Team of the Season: Opta Analyst’s 2024-25 XI

With the 2024-25 Serie A season concluded, it’s time to spotlight the players who excelled across the campaign. From record-breaking goalkeepers to prolific forwards, here’s Opta Analyst’s Serie A Team of the Season.

The 2024–25 Serie A season concluded with Napoli clinching their fourth Scudetto, edging out Inter in a tightly-contested title race. At the other end of the table, Empoli, Venezia and Monza were relegated after challenging campaigns.

With the season over, we’ve analysed the performances of every player and picked our Opta team of the season, with the help of our Italian football experts at OptaPaolo.

These 11 players have been selected after performing better than any other player in their respective position according to the data…

    GoalkeeperMile Svilar (Roma)

Mile Svilar posted the highest save percentage in Serie A this season (77%) among goalkeepers with more than 10 appearances. The Roma ‘keeper also kept 16 clean sheets – a joint-high with Napoli’s Alex Meret.

According to the underlying value of the chances he faced (xGOT), Svilar prevented 7.5 more goals than the average goalkeeper would have been expected to concede. That was the second-best figure in the league behind Torino’s Vanja Milinkovic-Savic (12.6).

    Right Centre-BackAmir Rrahmani (Napoli)

Amir Rrahmani played more minutes than any other Napoli player in 2024-25 as Conte’s side reclaimed the Scudetto.

Defensively, he led from the front, making more clearances (4.7) and winning more aerial duels (3.4) per 90 minutes than any other Napoli player. Aerially, he was dominant, winning aerial duels 69.6% of the time. Only Como’s Marc Kempf (71.7%) boasted a better win rate of players to have contested 100+ such duels in the air.

In possession, Rrahmani made the most touches (3,195), total passes (2,769) and successful passes (2,521) of any player in Serie A in 2024-25.

    Centre-BackEvan Ndicka (Roma)

In a sport where availability is at a premium, Evan Ndicka was the very definition of dependable. The Ivorian defender was one of only two outfield players to play every single minute of the 2024-25 Serie A season (3,420 minutes), alongside Lecce’s Federico Baschirotto. That endurance alone is very useful, but it was Ndicka’s defensive output that truly stood out.

He excelled in duels, winning 81% of his attempted tackles (26 of 32), the highest success rate among players with at least 30 tackles, while he led all Roma players for blocks, possession won and clearances.

    Left Centre-BackAlessandro Bastoni (Inter)

Alessandro Bastoni’s technical ability and attacking instincts have long set him apart from traditional centre-backs, and the 2024-25 season was no different.

The Inter defender recorded the highest open-play crossing accuracy among all defenders to attempt at least 10 crosses – landing 43.7% of his 64 open-play crosses on target (28 successful). That’s rare for a central defender, and one that reflects his willingness to carry the ball into wide areas and contribute creatively.

Bastoni led all centre-backs in assists with five, and created more chances than any other central defender (24) – underlining how often he functioned almost like a deep-lying playmaker for Simone Inzaghi’s side.

His heat map shows just how advanced he was asked to play on the left-hand side, and also how much ground he was asked to cover, protecting the space in behind Inter’s galloping wing-back Federico Dimarco.

    Right-MidfieldRiccardo Orsolini (Bologna)

A ninth-place finish for Bologna was not as bad as it looked on paper, with Vincenzo Italiano’s side only finishing three points off sixth. They also won their first major silverware in over 50 years by lifting the Coppa Italia, and central to a lot of their success was Riccardo Orsolini.

Only Mateo Retegui (25) and Moise Kean (19) scored more goals in Serie A than Orsolini this season, with his 15 goals coming in just 30 league appearances, meaning he averaged a goal every other game. No other Bologna player scored more than eight.

Overall, the 28-year-old enjoyed his most prolific Serie A campaign to date, with 19 goal involvements in total (four assists), recording his most goals and most assists in a single season in his career.

    Central MidfielderÉderson (Atalanta)

After being heavily linked with a move away from Atalanta last summer, Éderson put in another strong season for La Dea.

The Brazilian midfielder was involved in the most build-up sequences ending in a goal across Serie A this season (16) – at least three more than any other player.

As well as scoring four goals, Éderson won possession the second-most times in Serie A of midfielders this season (186), while only three won more duels (181), and only four made more passes (1,932).

    Central MidfielderTijjani Reijnders (AC Milan)

It wasn’t a great campaign for Milan, but Tijjani Reijnders stood out as a bright spark for the Rossoneri.

Only Scott McTominay (12) scored more goals than Reijnders (10) among midfielders in Serie A this season. In fact, the Dutchman became the first central midfielder to score at least 10 open-play goals in a single Serie A campaign for Milan since Antonio Nocerino in 2011-12.

Reijnders also worked hard off the ball, with only three midfielders recording more than his 38 interceptions.

    Left MidfieldScott McTominay (Napoli)

When Scott McTominay left Manchester United for Napoli last summer, few could have seen the impact the Scotland international would make in Italy.

McTominay helped fire Napoli to a fourth Serie A title, scoring 12 goals in the process (no other Serie A central midfielder scored as many, even though he’s playing left midfield in our team) as well as recording four assists.

McTominay scored more goals in goalless game states than any other player this season (eight) to help swing things the way of Antonio Conte’s side. The Serie A Player of the Year also both competed in (400) and won (208) more duels than any other midfielder.

    Right-ForwardMoise Kean (Fiorentina)

After years of unfulfilled potential, Moise Kean finally delivered on the big stage in 2024-25, scoring 19 goals for Fiorentina in Serie A. That was a tally that only Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui (25) bettered in the league.

Kean’s 19 goals were the most by an Italian for Fiorentina in a single season since Alberto Gilardino hit 19 for La Viola in 2008-09. This season was just the second time in Kean’s career that he has recorded double figures for goals, and the first since netting 13 for PSG in 2020-21.

He led all players in Italy for non-penalty expected goals per 90 (0.59), indicating that when he was on the pitch, Kean was getting into better goalscoring positions and taking better shots than any other player.

His goals weren’t just frequent; they were valuable too, directly earning Fiorentina 17 points – the highest return for any player in the league.

    StrikerMateo Retegui (Atalanta)

The winner of this season’s capocannoniere (or Paolo Rossi award), Mateo Retegui had a sensational 2024-25 campaign.

The Italy striker scored 25 goals in 36 Serie A games, the most ever by an Atalanta player in a single top-flight campaign. Retegui also had the most multi-goal games, scoring a brace three times, a hat-trick once and even scored four times in one game.

He was also the only player in Serie A to score at least 10 goals each with his right and left foot.

Retegui also created 38 chances from open play, with just 12 players in the competition recording more.

    Left-ForwardMarcus Thuram (Inter)

With his younger brother Khéphren arriving in Serie A last summer, the pressure was on for Marcus to win the family bragging rights. The Juventus midfielder had a solid campaign, but his older brother is the only one of the two who made our team of the season.

Marcus Thuram became just the second Frenchman to score as many as 14 goals in a single Serie A season for Inter, matching Youri Djorkaeff’s tally from 1996-97. All of his goals came from inside the box, too – the joint-most (14) alongside Romelu Lukaku.

Thuram also created plenty, with only nine players in Serie A manufacturing more that his 39 chances created from open play.
