TAKE a look inside Barbara Walters’ rise to fame from her family struggles and childhood to her trailblazing career ahead of a new documentary.
Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything will premiere on June 23 on Hulu, and will feature her most notable interviews and how she succeeded in a male-dominated industry.
Ahead of the unfiltered documentary, The U.S. Sun can go inside her life from her family struggles to her career as a legendary news anchor.
Barbara started her career as NBC’s Today Girl in the 60s when a woman covering hard news was unheard of.
However, a few years later she worked her way up to be the show’s first female co-host.
And in 1976 she made headlines as the first female network news anchor – and was making a whooping $1 million.
Barbara then went to ABC Evening News and by 1997 was the co-host for The View.
Barbara’s publicist Cindi Berger said in a statement, “She lived her life with no regrets.
“She was a trailblazer not only for female journalists, but for all women.”
EARLY LIFE
Barbara was born on September 25, 1929, to Dena and Louis Walters in Boston, Massachusetts.
Growing up, her father ran a popular club chain called the Latin Quarter.
He also worked in show business – which meant the family had a lot of uncertain financial times
She described her dad as “brilliant” and a “gambler,” while her mom was more conservative and liked to stay home.
Throughout her childhood, Barbara was surrounded by celebrities, which taught her a lesson at an early age.
“I would see them onstage looking one way and offstage often looking very different,” she said in a 1989 interview with the Television Academy of Arts & Sciences.
“I would hear my parents talk about them and know that even though those performers were very special people, they were also human beings with real-life problems.
“I can have respect and admiration for famous people, but I have never had a sense of fear or awe.”
Her father passed in 1977 from a heart attack.
Barbara’s sister Jackie, who had special needs, then died of Ovarian cancer in 1985.
HOME LIFE
Barbara suffered three miscarriages with her then-husband.
“I had three miscarriages, and finally, my husband Lee Guber and I adopted a baby girl,” she said in Barbara Walters: Her Story.
She named her daughter Jacqueline after her late sister.
“My sister was very pretty and very sweet,” she told People. “She was what we would probably call ‘developmentally challenged’ today. I loved her dearly.”

Before her death, the legendary journalist had not been seen in public for years.
Her last known public outing was at the Paris Theatre for the New York premiere of ‘Cafe Society’ on July 13, 2016.
Her View co-host Whoopi Goldberg gave a rare update on the show creator.
As a sweet, smiling photo of Barbara appeared on the screen, the moderator said, “To the one and only Barbara Walters, who had a birthday yesterday, we wanna say, 27 never looked so good!”
Barbara had kept to herself since retiring and had not had a public appearance since 2016, only adding to fans’ concerns.
The star was noticeably absent from all of The View’s 25th-anniversary celebrations as well the year of her death.
Barbara died on December 30, 2022 at the age of 93 after a career that spanned five decades.
TELL ME EVERYTHING
The Hulu documentary shows Barbara’s most iconic interviews, as she made headlines for her blunt and fearless questions.
Oprah, who makes an appearance on the documentary, said, “She asked the question that nobody else had asked and asked it in a way that always hit a nerve.”
“How are you going to find anybody?” she asked Taylor Swift in one clip about her dating life.
She then told Kris Jenner, and Kourtney, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, “You don’t act, you don’t sing, you don’t dance. You don’t have any, forgive me, talent!”
“She could talk to anyone about any thing,” Katie Couric said.
Barbara could be heard saying in a voice over,” I was never beautiful. If I had been a dog, I mean maybe they wouldn’t have put me on television. Nobody ever put me on because I was beautiful or glamorous.”
The documentary also touches on how she was a woman in a male-dominated industry.
A voiceover is heard saying, “She loved proving them wrong.”
