Brett Yormark has been discussing the future of the College Football Playoff with his league, and the commissioner of the Big 12 was ready to identify the preferred format for the future of the postseason.
On Wednesday, Brandon Marcello with CBS Sports reported that Yormark had a “great conversation” with Big 12 athletic directors. Yormark also described the Big 12 as being “aligned in our preference” for the potential 5+11 model for the Playoff.
Under that model, there would be 5 automatic qualifiers among conference champions and 11 at-large bids to the next highest-seeded teams.
The other model currently being discussed is identified as the 4-4-2-2-1 model that would divy up 4 automatic bids to both the SEC and the Big Ten, 2 automatic bids to both the Big 12 and the ACC, and 1 automatic bid to a Group of 5 conference champion. In that model, there would be 3 remaining at-large bids up for grabs.
Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark tells @CBSSports he had a "great conversation" with the league's athletic directors this morning and they are "aligned on our preference" for a 5+11 CFP model. Big 12 coaches will meet with Yormark on Thursday to discuss further.

At face value, the potential for 11 at-large bids seems like a no-brainer, with more potential room for access to the Big 12. However, that seems more like a pipe dream than anything else for the league, especially with Texas and Oklahoma now in the SEC for the future.
Last season, the Big 12 would have received just one bid to the Playoff in the 5+11 model with league champion Arizona State earning the automatic bid. The outlook would have been similar in 2023, after accounting for programs from the Big 12 and Pac-12 that are now in the SEC and Big Ten, respectively.
This is hardly the last we’ll hear of potential CFP formats, with more discussions to come before we reach a final decision.
