Millions to get $5,108 Social Security checks – and calendar quirk means early payments for millions next month

MILLIONS of Americans are in line to receive their Social Security checks worth up to $5,108 today as May’s last round of regular payments goes out.

Plus, a number of beneficiaries will see June’s payment come earlier than usual thanks to a calendar quirk.

Social Security beneficiaries receive their money on one of several days each month that the federal agency hands out the checks.

These payments generally occur on the third of each month in addition to the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

Retirees on Social Security see their checks deposited depending on their birth date, while the specific payment date for Americans on spousal or survivors benefits is determined by the primary beneficiary’s birthday rather than theirs.

This month, the first round of checks went out on May 2 because the third fell on a Saturday.

It was disbursed to the following individuals:

Those who live outside the US Those who receive both SSI and Social Security benefits  Those whose state pays their Medicare premiums Those who filed for Social Security benefits before 1997

Two additional rounds of Social Security payments have been sent out this month, on May 14 – to those born on the first to 10th of their birth month – and May 21 – to individuals with a birthday falling from the 11th to 20th.

May’s last round of checks will be sent out today – the fourth Wednesday of the month – to Americans with birthdays falling after the 20th of their birth month.

    HOW BIG IS YOUR CHECK?

The payments being distributed today are worth a maximum of $5,108 thanks to this year’s 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, which the SSA announced last October.

The average monthly Social Security payment for retirees increased on average by $50 to $1,976 as a result of the adjustment, which took effect in January.

The largest possible Social Security check, much higher than the average, is available to those who delay their retirement as much as possible.

Americans who retire at age 70 in 2025 can earn up to $5,108 each month in benefits – a number that drastically drops the earlier that an individual begins claiming Social Security.

For example, retirees who file their application at their full retirement age, or FRA, this year are capped at a monthly check of $4,018, which is up from $3,822 last year due to the COLA.

The FRA is based on the year you were born:

    1943–1954: age 66 1955–1959: age 66 and a certain number of months, increasing by two months each year: 1955: 66 and 2 months 1956: 66 and 4 months 1957: 66 and 6 months 1958: 66 and 8 months 1959: 66 and 10 months 1960 or later: age 67

    2025 Social Security Payment Schedule

Social Security payments are handed out on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of each month. Benefits will be paid out in 2025 on the following dates:

    January 8, 15, and 22 February 12, 19, and 26 March 12, 19, and 26 April 9, 16, and 23 May 14, 21, and 28 June 11, 18, and 25 July 9, 16, and 23 August 13, 20, and 27 September 10, 17, and 24 October 8, 15, and 22 November 12, 19, and 26 December 10, 17, and 24

Americans who begin claiming Social Security at age 62 in 2025 are limited to a maximum monthly benefit of $2,831, up from $2,710 last year.

    DOUBLE TAKE

Supplemental Security Income, also administered by the SSA, is a needs-based program for those with limited income and resources who are either aged 65 or older, blind, or with a qualifying disability.

SSI payments are typically handed out on the first of each month but are issued early when this day falls on a weekend or holiday.

Americans should have already received May’s SSI check earlier this month on May 1.

They will see a second SSI payment hit their bank accounts on May 30 due to a calendar oddity.

Because June 1 falls on a weekend, June’s SSI check will be sent out early.

“When the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month,” the SSA explained in a 2022 blog.

“That means you may get two SSI payments in the same month.

“We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment.

“It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.”

As the SSA prepares to send out the final checks in May, other changes are underway regarding the social program.

For example, seniors will see the lowest Social Security bump in five years after Americans call the COLA increase “a joke.”

Plus, Social Security is set to make history with the first ever payout switch in 90 years – and millions are impacted.
