Just one day before its Season 4 finale airs on Max, HBO has confirmed that their award-winning dark comedy series, Hacks, has been renewed for a fifth season at the network.
The announcement was made by Hacks' creators and primary showrunners Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky this past Tuesday, as reported by Variety. This welcome development for fans of the critically acclaimed comedy series comes as Hacks celebrates what might very well be its most successful season on HBO yet.
Over the past four seasons, Hacks has followed the complex relationship formed between an aging comedian (Jean Smart) and the aspiring comedy writer (Hannah Einbinder) she hires for her material. While each woman relies on the other's talents in order to advance their individual careers, they nevertheless develop a love-hate relationship with one another, mainly owing to their respective egos, personal differences and long-term career ambitions.
Earning glowing reviews since its debut in the summer of 2021, Hacks has earned a myriad of accolades with each new season. Among the dozens of prestigious awards it's garnered, Hacks has twice won the Golden Globe Award for Best TV Series and Best Actress (Smart), along with numerous Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Lead Actress (Smart), Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Comedy Series.
Additionally, Warner Bros. Discovery have reported that the latest season of Hacks has secured its largest audience yet, proving to be the most-watched season of the show so far.
"Yes! More! We congratulate Hacks' singularly talented cast and crew and our great partners at Universal Television," the head of Max's original programming, Sarah Aubrey, said of the announcement.
"Like [Smart's character] Deborah Vance herself, Hacks only gets bolder, sharper and more iconic with time," echoed Universal Television's president, Erin Underhill. "We're beyond thrilled to keep the laughter rolling with Jen, Paul, Lucia, our extraordinary cast and crew and our partners at Max."
