Greg Byrne discussed the Alabama-Tennessee “Third Saturday in October” rivalry game and the potential of it dropping off the SEC schedule, especially if the conference remains at 8 games.
Alabama and Tennessee first played each other in 1901. Since then, they have met 107 times, with Alabama holding a 59-40-7 lead in the series.
Could the series eventually move to a less-frequent schedule unless the SEC moves to a 9-game conference schedule? Byrne chimed in during the SEC spring meetings in Destin.
“If you go to nine, you might have some more flexibility with what that looks like. But I wouldn’t like to see (the Tennessee rivalry go away),” the Alabama athletic director said on Tuesday, according to AL.com. “But I also realize that things are going to evolve and change. It would be a sad time if that were to happen, but also, you have to deal with reality.”
The current 8-game setup means that each SEC team will be allowed 1 permanent opponent each year, which, in Alabama’s case, naturally is Auburn. A 9-game slate, though, could help the Third Saturday in October contest, along with other rivalries across the conference, remain an annual fixture of the college football schedule.
The 2025 edition of the Third Saturday in October is in Tuscaloosa. Tennessee beat Alabama, 24-17, in 2024.
