Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl could be in the mix to replace Tommy Tuberville as a United States senator, according to a report.
That news comes from Semafor’s Shelby Talcott and Burgess Everett. Their report suggests Pearl is being “floated” as a potential replacement for Tuberville should the former Auburn football coach follow through with reported plans to run for Governor of Alabama.
While the report is speculative, it does cite one source who says they heard Pearl had plans to run for the office. Here’s an excerpt from the story:
One person familiar with the situation said they heard Pearl plans to run — he’s chairman of the US Israel Education Association, and he was on Capitol Hill just last week. His X feed, meanwhile, isn’t what one would typically expect of a head college coach: One of his most recent posts calls for dismantling Iran’s nuclear program.
Despite his clear interest in some political issues, others are skeptical Pearl would ever get into the race and see him as a longshot given his success on the court.
Of course, it would be shocking to see any sitting head coach leave their post for a political career, let alone one as successful as Pearl. According to USA Today, Pearl makes nearly $6 million annually in base pay. He led Auburn basketball to its second Final Four in program history earlier this spring.
While Semafor was unable to reach Pearl for comment on this story, Tuberville did speak about the possibility of Pearl running for Senate.
“The compensation is a little bit different. I wouldn’t let him do it because he did such a good job at Auburn,” Tuberville told Semafor. “We need him there.”
