America’s Got Talent returns to celebrate its landmark 20th season of the hit competition series tonight, with Mel B reclaiming her seat at the judges' table after a six-year absence. She will be joining Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara as they weigh in on a variety of acts, including singers, magicians, danger acts, and some never-before-seen acts who compete for the prestigious Golden Buzzers, or at least a shot at making it to the Live Shows and America’s vote.
“I’m excited,” Howie says of sitting next to Mel B this season. “It’s so much. I laugh so hard, I get so confused because she’s confused. I answer so many weird questions. There’s so much energy, craziness, scariness, spiciness.”
And Mel B teases back, “He’s like my annoying brother.”

When the show premieres tonight on NBC, the audition episodes have already been filmed. And like last season, each of the judges will have two Golden Buzzers, and host Terry Crews will have two as well.
The selection of the Golden Buzzer acts is always exciting and moving, so Parade talked to the judges and Terry about what motivated them to press for their Golden Buzzers this season, even though they aren’t able to reveal their identities.

“Your Golden Buzzer is the most you’re charged with emotionally in being a judge on this show, the possibility of giving somebody [their dream],” Howie said. “It’s not like I plan on the next one’s going to be a Golden Buzzer. You just sit back, open-minded. It’s just an ‘Oh, wow’ moment.
“We see a lot, especially me who’s been here so long, and you feel like you’re jaded. So when somebody moves me that much to go, ‘Oh, my God, this is so much more than just great, this is so much more than just entertaining.’ This is a moment where you want to be part of the path this act is taking and send them further into the stratosphere of entertainment.”

“Well, this particular Golden Buzzer had a very similar story to me,” Mel B told Parade. “She’d gone from everything to nothing, homeless, managed to save up on money and buy a house. She’s turning 50 this year, she’s a survivor, she’s so kind and just amazing. I’m saying “she” now, so I’m kind of giving it away, but you know.”
And for her second Golden Buzzer, the Messoudi Brothers, she added, “Then my other Golden Buzzer is so dangerous and so scary. But also quite sexy in a strange way. It’s exhausting when you watch this Golden Buzzer.”
Sofia Vergara
Sofia Vergara“Well, the first time I started working here, I had never done a Golden Buzzer. And I was like, ‘How am I going to pick this thing? What do I know about anything?’” Sofia recalls. “It’s something that you simply feel; it’s super weird. The first time I did a Golden Buzzer was my first day at work on AGT, and it was an amazing feeling. You have a connection with this person that you think, ‘Oh, they have potential,’ and you want to help them achieve their potential.”

In the past, Terry has selected his Golden Buzzers on the emotional connection he feels for them. Bbut this season, he’s saying it’s the energy.
“I’m a big energy guy. I got to go off of the feeling,” he says. “My two Golden Buzzers, I’m not going to give them away yet, but it made sense. It gets to the point where you know if you don’t press, something’s wrong. I’ve got to be that one, and I want a champion. I’m like their guardian, so it’s perfect.”
America’s Got Talent will return tonight at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Stream next day on Peacock.
