Two-time Grand Slam winner surpasses Venus and Serena Williams with historic French Open win

Victoria Azarenka made history on Tuesday after cruising to a first-round victory at the French Open.

The Belarusian star booked her spot in the second round at Roland-Garros by making quick work of Belgian Yanina Wickmayer in just 48 minutes.

The win saw the 35-year-old become the oldest player in the Open Era to win a Women’s Singles Grand Slam main draw match with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline.

The previous record was held by Venus Williams who achieved the feat at Wimbledon in 2015.

Since the year 2000, only Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters (six each) have won more Women’s Singles Grand Slam matches with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline than Azarenka, who notched her fifth to eclipse that of Serena Williams with four.

It is Azarenka’s second 6-0, 6-0 win at Roland-Garros after beating Sorana Cirstea by the same scoreline in 2008.

Meanwhile, Wickmayer revealed she will retire from the sport after Wimbledon this summer.

Ranked outside the world’s top 1,000, Wickmayer held just one game point during Tuesday’s match.

Azarenka showed her dominance early on and went on to win 49 of the 66 points at stake, while Wickmayer produced 26 unforced errors

The world no. 75 will now face American Sofia Kenin in the next round after she swept aside France’s Varvara Gracheva, 6-3, 6-1.

The match, which took place on Court Philippe-Chatrier, saw the French no.1 beaten in just 66 minutes.

Kenin has enjoyed a strong season so far and is hoping to go one better than in 2020 when she slipped to defeat in the final at the hands of Iga Swiatek.

The American was in fine form on Tuesday, converting six of eight break points to book her place in the second round.

Kenin has already shown her quality on clay this year having finished runner-up to Jessica Pegula in Charleston.

Azarenka is next in line for Kenin who leads 2-1 in the pair’s head-to-head.

The Belarusian won their only clay-court match five years ago in Rome with a scoreline of 6-0, 6-0.
