Danielle Collins has described an incident in a recent match against Emma Raducanu as ‘really pathetic’.
The American faced off against Raducanu at the Strasbourg Open last week as the pair fine-tuned themselves ahead of the French Open at Roland Garros.
During the match, Collins confronted a camera operator for failing to prove Raducanu with any space.
Collins went on to win the three-set match against the Brit but described the incident as ‘wildly inappropriate’
“I think what happened in Strasbourg was just me asking for personal space at my workplace. I don’t know why that is even a topic of discussion, frankly. I mean, it should be something that we can get to have during, like, our work,” the world No. 7 stated.
“The fact that I’ve had to ask so many different times in my career and during different matches to just have an adequate level of personal space I think is kind of strange.
“I think oftentimes it seems like my response is treated like the offense itself. I’m learning that as a female, asking for personal space seems to be an issue for a lot of people. I think it’s really pathetic honestly that it’s even a topic of discussion.”
Raducanu publicly showed her support to Collins after the American revealed she was trying to help the former US Open winner after the cameraman ‘stood on top of her’.
“It’s something that over time there’s been no one that’s been able to kind of make the adjustment. In the video, there’s so much that people don’t see.
“They don’t see the person go and stand right on top of Emma to get a good shot of me in about a two-to three-foot space.
“I’m doing a performance job, trying to focus on my work, trying to maintain my focus and concentration.
“My job requires channelling physical, emotional, and then logical, right, things going on. It’s my job to try to put that all together. The last thing that I should be focusing on is someone that’s right on top of my opponent and right in my face.”

Raducanu said: “I was standing up because I didn’t want to sit down in the third set because of my back. I was standing as it was a bit more comfortable.
“Then, she came to fill a bottle up and was saying how the cameraman was really close and it felt a bit inappropriate. That’s all she was saying.”
Collins, who later lost in the semi-finals in Strasbourg kicked off her Roland Garros campaign with a win over another Brit in Jodie Burrage.
Raducanu also made a successful start in Paris despite later admitting to feeling unwell. She saw off China’s Xinyu Wang in three sets to set up a clash with four-time champion Iga Swiatek.
“I think I’m actually really proud of today’s match, more so than a lot of the matches that I played recently or in general, because I woke up and I felt really sick, to be honest,” Raducanu said.

“To have kind of come through that and overcome how I was feeling, I’m really happy with and I didn’t let it kind of, you know…it would have been easy to kind of let it drag me down.
“I don’t know why I’ve struggled today. The last few days, I’ve just not really been feeling great. I guess I’m managing a few things. I’m glad I can have some rest and hopefully rest up before playing Wednesday.”
