Vaibhav Suryavanshi set the IPL on fire this year. The youngster plied his trade for the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025. The season was nothing less than a fairytale for the 14-year-old from Bihar.
That he was a special talent became very clear when he earned his maiden IPL contract in the mega auction last year, at just 13 years of age. The inaugural IPL winners had secured his services for INR 1.1 crore. Vaibhav Suryavanshi did not get a chance in the Rajasthan Royals playing eleven for the first seven games.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi eventually made his debut during the game against Lucknow Super Giants at the age of 14 years and 23 days, becoming the youngest debutant in the history of IPL. The left-handed batsman left the cricketing world stunned by hitting the very first ball he faced in the tournament for a six. He has not looked back since then.

The teenager opened the innings in each of the remaining six games for the Royals and impressed one and all. Vaibhav Suryavanshi also added to his growing list of records by becoming the youngest centurion in men's T20 cricket when he smashed a 35-ball ton against Gujarat Titans. He eventually finished his IPL campaign with 252 runs from 7 games.
Is Vaibhav Suryavanshi the next Sachin Tendulkar?
With Vaibhav Suryavanshi rewriting history in the IPL, the fans have started comparing him with none other than the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The former India batsman also took the world by storm as a teenager before going on to become one of the most decorated batsmen of all time.
While only time will tell how things unfold for Vaibhav Suryavanshi, former Australia captain Steve Waugh believes no one should be compared with Tendulkar. The Australian legend recalled Tendulkar's 'freakish' century as an 18-year-old in Perth, a venue that was considered a nightmare for batsmen. Tendulkar had scored 114 runs off 161 balls in the 1992 Perth Test and also became the youngest ever to score a hundred on Australian soil.
"I don’t think you can compare anyone to Sachin Tendulkar," Waugh said during an event in Mumbai. "I mean, a 16-year-old (18-year-old) coming out to Australia and scoring a century in Perth on the hardest, (the) most unique pitch in world cricket where most players really struggle to play on a pitch."
"…for him to score a century as a teenager in Perth was a freakish performance. It’s very rare you get a Sachin Tendulkar come along. But I would never have expected a 14-year-old to score a 100 in the IPL, that was unthinkable," he added.
At the same time, Waugh did not undermine Suryavanshi's talent and said that it is still unthinkable for him to be that successful at the age of 14.
"Even right now it’s unthinkable. I look back to myself as a 14-year-old and I couldn’t contemplate being in that situation and being successful," Waugh said.
"Can he play the same way with the same enthusiasm, the same freedom as he has done this year? That’ll be his challenge. He’s got a lot of skill, he’s mentally tough and he’s got a great backstory, so you want to see someone like that be successful. It’s a great story for cricket and for me watching from a long way away," Waugh said.
