SHEDEUR SANDERS could be cut by the Cleveland Browns before the start of the NFL season, according to reports.
The Browns have five quarter-backs on their roster, although Deshaun Watson is expected to miss the start of the season as he recovers from surgery on a torn Achilles tendon.
Roster limits mean will likely mean cuts have to be made however, with Sanders at risk.
The former Colorado Buffaloes star was a fifth-round pick for the Browns in the NFL Draft – behind fellow QB Dillon Gabriel.
That means he has started training camp as the Brown’s No4 quarter-back, with Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett also ahead of him.
According to ESPN reporter Daniel Oyefusi, there is now some doubt over whether Sanders will be included in the Browns’ roster.
Oyefusi said: “Getting drafted behind Gabriel adds an element of uncertainty to Sanders’ rookie season.
“While he was widely ranked ahead of the third-rounder before the draft, Sanders will likely begin training camp as the fourth QB on the depth chart and won’t be guaranteed a roster spot.
“Cleveland did trade up to draft him, which should afford him more time to develop, but Sanders likely has a longer pathway to the field unless he completely outplays his competition.”
The Browns plan to have former first-round pick Pickett and the third-round pick Oregon Ducks product Gabriel splitting the first and second team reps during OTAs, per Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot.
And the report added that Pickett is the current favorite to the lead the team’s offense in Week 1 ahead of OTAs and mandatory minicamp and that “it is his job to “lose.”
“It’s a tough call before we’ve even seen the first practice of organized team activities, but I know Kenny Pickett heads in as the frontrunner to win the starting job at the outset,” Cabot wrote.
She also reported that Sanders and Flacco will split the third and fourth team reps.
Sanders addressed the quarterback competition with Dillon Gabriel after the Draft.
Sanders insists he is not frustrated or concerned with the overpopulated QB dressing room.
And the Texas native is particularly happy to work with Gabriel, whom he admires greatly.
Sanders told Sports Casting: “Everything’s been cool.
“He’s a cool person. I like how he handles situations, especially just the negative media that’s coming his way.
“I’m just happy he’s positive, he’s able to handle everything. We’re truly cool.”
