Legendary Indian opener and commentator Virender Sehwag never misses a moment to mix humor with sharp insight, and this time, Rohit Sharma was on his radar at the commentary box.
During the IPL 2025 clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in Jaipur, Virender Sehwag took a playful jab at Rohit Sharma’s struggles in the powerplay in the ongoing IPL 2025.
As fellow commentator Aakash Chopra pointed out Rohit had faced only 8 balls by the fourth over while his opening partner Ryan Rickelton had already faced double, Sehwag made the most of the chance to steal the spotlight during the IPL 2025 clash on May 26.
In classic Sehwag fashion, the former aggressive Indian opener said that fewer balls in the powerplay is a blessing for Rohit, as the Mumbai Indians opener at least won’t lose his wicket in the first six overs. With his trademark flair, Sehwag turned Rohit’s struggle into a punchline.

Virender Sehwag said in the Hindi commentary, “Acha hai. Is bahane wo powerplay ke baad tak tike rahenge. Warna, powerplay mein jitni jyada gendein wo khelte hai, utne jyada chances ho jaate hai unke out hone ke. (It's good. This way, he would still be at the crease after the powerplay. Otherwise, the more balls he faces in the power play, the more chances there are of him getting out.”

Rohit Sharma’s powerplay nightmare in IPL 2025
Rohit Sharma was dismissed nine times in the powerplay out of his 13 innings so far in the ongoing IPL 2025.
The seasoned opener has so far amassed only 329 runs at a strike rate of 147.50 in his 13 outings so far in the tournament. The MI opener has only three fifties to his name this season.
However, Mumbai Indians have already qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs, and they will now face either Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) or Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator after losing their final league match to Punjab Kings by seven wickets in Jaipur on Monday.

PBKS is currently leading the table with 19 points, followed by Gujarat Titans with 18 points.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru are currently at the third spot with 17 points, and if they manage to beat the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the last league match on May 27, RCB will face PBKS in Qualifier 1, and if LSG wins, they will lock horns against MI in the Eliminator of the IPL 2025.
Rohit Sharma's inconsistency in IPL raises eyebrows
Notably, Rohit Sharma’s IPL form has been inconsistent in recent years, barring a standout 2024 season where he scored over 400 runs at a strike rate of 150.99. Since 2022, he has managed only seven fifty-plus scores, highlighting a steady decline.
In 2025, despite a decent strike rate, his 329 runs from 13 matches haven’t delivered many match-winning moments. His inconsistency has increased pressure on teammates, especially Suryakumar Yadav, who often carries the batting load.
With each season, Rohit failed to meet the expectations, raising questions about his effectiveness in the format.
