Bandimere is aiming to open a new drag strip in Weld County

HUDSON, Colo. (KDVR) — After 66 years of car racing in Morrison, Bandimere Speedway packed its bags and bid its quarter-mile strip goodbye last year, marking the end of an era.

But that's not the end of the Bandimere family's racing legacy: A new track is in the works.

The organization had its last day of business on Hogback Mountain in Morrison on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, but promised that wouldn't be the end. Since then, there have been some rumours that the family-run race track would reopen in Weld County, although the Bandimere family has tried to keep the gossip mill at bay.

"We know how easy it is for rumors to be spread about the future of the speedway, but we are here to tell you that we have secured a piece of property in Hudson, CO and we are in the process of due diligence on the land with the hopes that breaking ground on a racetrack will begin in the coming months," the family posted on Oct. 29, 2024.

John Bandimere Jr. made the official announcement of the new location on May 22.

"At that time, although our future was uncertain, we knew that our faith and trust in God would direct us," Bandimere said. "And we also promised you that when we had news, we would share it with you. Well, we have some news."

“I think it’s a great idea and opportunity for the town of Hudson and this whole area. I’m sad they chose to move, but I’m happy they chose this area,” Hudson resident Brian Welsh told FOX31's Vicente Arenas.

“It’s a good thing and I can say exciting, too? Why not?” Hudson resident Issac Diaz told Arenas.

Bandimere noted that in 1958, his parents began a legacy of automobile racing near Denver.

"Believe me when I tell you, this has not been an easy undertaking, nor has it been a quick process," Bandimere said. "Earlier this week, my family, along with a trusted group of partners and associates, were able to close on the first parcel of land located in Weld County, Hudson area."

He said this is the first piece of a complex puzzle to negotiate for other properties in the area.

"Zoning and annexation will now be taking place, with the exact timing not really sure, and we're not really clear as to how that will all work out," Bandimere said.

The new location was not announced in the Facebook video, but was named as the previous Rocky's Auto site off the Interstate 76 Frontage Road. The parcel in question has 116 acres and is zoned for agriculture.

FOX31 reached out to the city of Hudson and the Weld County Commissioners Court, but has not received a response.

A spokesperson for Bandimere said they were out of town and not available to provide a comment or additional information for this report.
