‘That’s the answer’ – Aaron Rodgers makes brutal decision on future after $30m QB paved way for shock move

It’s almost June and Aaron Rodgers still doesn’t have an NFL team yet.

For much of the offseason so far, it has been assumed that Rodgers will sign for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but after Derek Carr’s surprise retirement, things became a little muddy.

Rumours began to swirl that the New Orleans Saints could sign Rodgers to replace Carr, who stepped aside from football, citing ongoing injuries that would have jeopardized the Saints’ upcoming campaign.

The 30-year-old’s retirement frees up $30 million on the Saints’ payroll, which would open the door to an expensive quarterback, like Rodgers.

CBS Sports writer Cody Benjamin urged the Saints to pick up Aaron Rodgers as he claimed the 41-year-old would thrive in the NFC South.

“Here’s the greatest rub, for both Rodgers and the Saints: Unlike the Steelers, the Saints do not play in the AFC North, which includes a pair of justified Super Bowl aspirants in the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals,” Benjamin wrote.

“They play in the NFC South, which over the last three seasons has crowned a champion with these final records: 8-9, 9-8, 10-7.”

Despite Benjamin’s best efforts to frame the Saints as an attractive destination for Rodgers, the former New York Jets star thinks otherwise.

At a recent Q&A session at a Mike Stud concert in Austin, Texas, the four-time MVP quarterback shut down a fan’s question about playing for in New Orleans.

“No,” Rodgers said to groans in the crowd.

“That’s the answer. I’ve played there a couple of times, but no. I’m too old. I don’t want to live in Louisiana. Sorry.”

Despite ruling out the possibility of playing in New Orleans, when asked about joining the Chicago Bears, Rodgers decided to drop a cryptic hint.

“No, but I believe there’s a team that might play in Chicago this year on a road trip,” Rodgers said.

“I don’t know, not sure. Got to check it out.”

The Saints go to Soldier Field in Week 7, but the Bears also host the Steelers in Week 12, although it’s unlikely Rodgers would ever replace Caleb Williams in Chicago.

As the questions kept coming, Rodgers was also asked if he was signing with the Steelers, and he gave another vague response.

    “You never know,” he said.

As it stands, many expect Rodgers to land with the Steelers, especially after the chaos of this year’s draft.

The franchise appeared to build their draft strategy around an incoming quarterback, opting against picking a high-profile rookie signal caller to re-establish what Mike Tomlin described as ‘physicality and big man presence’.

The Steelers typically bring four quarterbacks into the summer and currently have three — Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Skylar Thompson — as underwhelming of a QB room you’re ever likely to see.

All signs point to Pittsburgh for Rodgers, but the 41-year-old is keeping everyone on their toes.
