A large crowd went on a rampage in downtown Los Angeles overnight, vandalizing businesses and MTA trains, authorities said Sunday, May 25.
Officers were dispatched at about 10 p.m. Saturday to the 1700 block of Trinity Street regarding a large group trespassing and vandalizing area businesses, including an MTA train, according to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Division.
Video by freelance news videographer Key News Network also showed fireworks lit in the street.
An LAPD spokesperson said the caller reported at least 1,000 people at the scene, but the department could not corroborate that number.
According to ABC7, several hundred people had gathered for a non-permitted rooftop event at what appeared to be an abandoned building. The station said police fired rubber bullets after they issued multiple warnings to clear the chaotic scene.
The area is located a few blocks south of the Fashion District, between East Washington Boulevard and Interstate 10.
No arrests or injuries were reported.
Around midnight, about 50 trespassers blocked two Metro Blue (A) Line trains traveling both northbound and southbound at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Maple Street, according to the MTA. The vandals began to spray paint trains, gained entry into a southbound train and sprayed paint on the interior of that train, the agency added.
No operators or passengers were harmed, but service was delayed for about 20 minutes.
Anyone with additional information regarding the vandalism was urged to contact LAPD Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
