Suresh Raina, on Sunday (May 25), all but confirmed that he will be the batting coach for Chennai Super Kings in the next season of the IPL.
The former India and Chennai Super Kings batsman confirmed the development while commentating during the match between the Chennai-based outfit and Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
As Suresh Raina and Aakash Chopra were commentating, the latter asked if the incoming batting coach’s name starts with the letter 'S'. In response, Suresh Raina did not deny it and all but confirmed his return to the franchise by saying that the incoming coach holds the record for the fastest IPL fifty for Chennai Super Kings.

Suresh Raina holds the record for the fastest fifty for the five-time IPL champions. In IPL 2014, he had smashed a 16-ball half-century against Punjab Kings during the second qualifier at the Wankhede Stadium. As soon as Raina dropped the big hint, Chopra confirmed the speculation with a lighthearted remark.
"Jo batting coach aa raha hai, uska naam ka initial 'S' to nahi hai?” (The new batting coach - does his name start with an 'S'?)," asked Chopra.
In reply, Raina said: "Fastest 50 hai IPL me (He has the fastest fifty in IPL).
Chopra then said: "Chalo ho gaya bhai, you heard it first here!" (It’s confirmed, you heard it here first!)

If Raina is indeed appointed as the batting coach, he would be replacing his former IPL teammate and Australia great, Michael Hussey. Chennai Super Kings have endured a terrible campaign this season and have missed out on the playoffs for the second year in a row.
This is the first time that the Chennai-based franchise has failed to qualify for the playoffs for two years in a row. Before taking on the Gujarat Titans in their last game, Chennai were at the bottom of the points table with just 3 wins from 13 games.

Suresh Raina enjoyed a glorious career in the IPL, spending most of it with the Chennai Super Kings. He made his debut in the IPL in 2008 and retired after the 2021 season. Barring the two seasons in 2016 and 2017 when Chennai Super Kings were suspended, he played for the Chennai-based outfit in the other seasons.
Overall, he played 200 games for Chennai and scored 5529 runs with the help of 2 centuries and 38 fifties. He is still Chennai's all-time leading run-scorer.
