Pacers’ iconic arena hosted MJ’s comeback and final ever Elvis concert before being demolished in just 12 seconds

Michael Jordan, Reggie Miller and Elvis Presley all have at least one thing in common.

They each lit up Market Square Arena.

Located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, the venue played host to a string of iconic events after opening in September 1974.

Presley, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, performed his final live concert at MSA, in front of 18,000 people, seven weeks before his death in August 1977.

Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson and KISS were also no strangers to Indianapolis, and all delighted crowds as they played inside the arena.

Of course, while Market Square Arena hosted some of the biggest music artists in the world during its heyday, it was built primarily with one thing in mind — basketball.

The Indiana Pacers called the venue home from 1974 to 1999, and during those final years, reached the Eastern Conference Finals on two different occasions.

Led by Miller, their star of the 90s, Indiana were first beaten by the Orlando Magic in a seven game series in 1995, and then by the New York Knicks in six, as the conference title eluded them at Market Square Arena.

Miller, though, gave fans plenty of memories despite coming up short.

He pulled off some unthinkable playoff victories against the Knicks, and famously ‘choked’ Spike Lee during a legendary game at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1994.

While Miller and the Pacers had a heated rivalry with the Knicks — which has been renewed in this year’s Eastern Conference Finals by ‘Clutch king’ Tyrese Haliburton and Co. — Indiana also clashed with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, too.

In fact, when ‘His Airness’ decided to return to the NBA after a brief retirement, his first game back took place at Market Square Arena on March 19, 1995.

The three-time MVP played 43 minutes, finishing with 19 points (on 7-of-28 shooting), six rebounds, and six assists.

Miller, meanwhile, scored 28 points in what was the most-watched NBA game on television in 20 years.

When all was said and done, the Pacers defeated the Bulls in overtime, 103-96.

It’s fair to say, then, that Market Square Arena has some serious history hosting both stars of the sporting and music worlds.

But while it was a staple of the Indianapolis skyline for nearly three decades, it took just 12 seconds to come crashing down in a spectacular controlled explosion.

The arena was demolished in in July 2001 with 800 pounds of explosives, the push of two buttons, and a thunderous roar.

By the turn of the millennium, MSA was deemed obsolete.

It couldn’t expand and accommodate the up-and-coming, revenue-generating feature of the ‘luxury box’ — and was left to die a slow death after the Pacers moved out in 1999.

The team now plays at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

While it only took 12 seconds for the walls of Market Square Arena to come tumbling down in 2001, the demolition created a mess that required months of cleanup.

Downtown streets were described as a ‘war zone’ in the days that followed, as 15,000 tons of debris littered the area.

All that is left now, are memories of a once iconic arena.

“For the city to grow, it has to happen,” a spectator said at the time of the demolition.

“Now it’s just a bunch of debris, and we move on without it.”
