Schumacher’s Ferrari F2001 sets new record at Monaco auction

The iconic 2001 Ferrari that carried Michael Schumacher to victory at the Monaco Grand Prix that year and which ultimately helped the F1 legend secure his fourth world championship has sold for a staggering €15,980,000 ($18.17 million) at an RM Sotheby’s auction held on Saturday in Monaco.

The record-breaking sale, which makes the Scuderia’s F2001 design – chassis no. 211 – the most valuable Formula 1 car ever driven by Schumacher to be sold at auction, took place fittingly on the streets where the car etched its name in history.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Keep Fighting Foundation, the charity established to continue Schumacher’s philanthropic legacy following his tragic skiing accident in 2013.

Augustin Sabatié-Garat, Director of Sales at RM Sotheby’s, emphasized the historical significance of the race-winning machine.

“Victory on the streets of Monte-Carlo alone would make this a hugely significant Ferrari, but to do so in the same season that it crossed the line to capture both the Drivers’ and [Teams]’ World Championships – the first back-to-back championship double in Ferrari history – takes it to a completely different level,” he explained.

“We are very excited to take chassis 211 back to the site of its historic win, and to be able to auction it during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend is an immense privilege.”

Visitors this weekend to the F1 Paddock Club had the rare opportunity to view the car up close, its scarlet bodywork and racing pedigree on full display amid the glamour of Monte Carlo.

A Crown Jewel of Formula 1 History

The F2001 wasn’t just another title-winning Ferrari. It was the Ferrari that marked an era of dominance, engineered with a 3.0-litre V10 that delivered 825 horsepower.

Driven by Schumacher and teammate Rubens Barrichello, the chassis contributed to 10 wins, 13 pole positions, three fastest laps, and 197 points across the 2001 season.

Chassis 211 holds unique prestige: it is the only Ferrari in which Schumacher won both the Monaco Grand Prix and the drivers’ title in the same season.

That same year, a win at the Hungarian Grand Prix sealed the constructors’ championship for the Italian outfit – securing Maranello’s first back-to-back championship double and cementing the car’s place in racing lore.

To date, it remains the last Ferrari to win in Monaco the same year the team captured the championship title.

In the broader world of Formula 1 auction history, Schumacher’s F2001 now ranks fourth among the most valuable Grand Prix cars ever sold.

It trails only the legendary 1955 Mercedes-Benz W196 R Streamliner, which holds the all-time record at €51.155 million; the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 R driven by Juan Manuel Fangio, which fetched $29.6 million in 2013; and the 2013 Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 W04, the only Lewis Hamilton race-winning car in private hands, which sold for $18.8 million at auction in Las Vegas in 2023

As one of the most celebrated cars from one of the sport’s most legendary eras, the F2001 stands not just as a monument to engineering, but as a time capsule of Schumacher’s genius — now immortalized through its record-breaking sale.
