State baseball Day 2: Quartet of local teams survive past opening weekend

As hard as University’s baseball team has worked all spring long for that number one that sits in front of its name on the Class 3A state tournament bracket, there is only one number the Bulldogs are fully invested in: the number six.

University isn’t taking anything for granted as it pursues its sixth baseball state title in school history, which the Bulldogs would secure if they’re the final team standing May 31 after a rough-and-tumble state tournament.

It’s for that reason that University is hardly concerned with being the No. 1 seed at the start of the eight-team state tournament.

“A seeding is just a number right now, because anybody that makes it to state can win it,” Bulldogs eighth-year coach Casey Miller said during a practice a couple days before the start of the state tournament. “There is more parity in 3A baseball this year than there has been in the last five, six years. That’s what everyone is going into this weekend with: everyone does have a chance and nothing is guaranteed.”

Sometimes there are bumps in the road toward the final destination.

University experienced exactly that in what Miller called a nervous performance in a 3-0 loss Saturday at Butch Butler Field against second-seeded Coal Ridge (25-2-1) in a winners bracket third round game. That game featured the final two teams without a loss in the double-elimination tournament.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs (24-4) locked up their spot in the final weekend of the state tournament by going 2-0 during Day 1 on Friday. They will face fifth-seeded Montezuma-Cortez (23-5) or No. 4 Resurrection Christian (19-9) at 12:30 pm. this coming Friday with a berth to Saturday’s finals at stake.

University certainly approached the first day of the four-day, two-weekend, double-elimination state tournament like a team that knows nothing is guaranteed.

The Bulldogs held off a hungry eighth-seeded Valley squad for a 5-4 win in the first round early Friday before knocking off fourth-seeded Resurrection Christian 5-2 in the second round a few hours later.

As impressive as University’s season has been thus far, junior Joel Ramirez said he and his teammates are far from satisfied.

“We just want to go for bigger things,” Ramirez said. “Regionals isn’t enough. We just want to go for that bigger trophy; have gold instead of silver in our hardware.”

Windsor falls behind in third round

As of late Saturday afternoon, fourth-seeded Windsor was still in position to escape the first weekend of the 4A state tournament unblemished.

The Wizards trailed third-seeded Coal Ridge 11-10 in the fifth inning, despite leading 10-5 an inning earlier. Windsor’s momentum was disrupted by a prolonged weather delay at the Air Force Academy.

That game concluded after the Tribune’s print deadlines. Check greeleytribune.com and read Wednesday’s print edition for the final result.

Regardless of the final outcome, Windsor had already secured its spot in the final weekend of the double-elimination tournament, this coming  Friday and Saturday.

The Wizards defeated fifth-seeded Palisade 9-2 and top-seeded Pueblo County 8-2 on Friday.

    Platte Valley suffers first loss

Seventh-seeded Platte Valley was unable to secure another upset Saturday. The Broncos fell 10-0 in five innings to top-seeded Forge Christian (24-4) in the third round of the 2A state tournament at the Runyon Field Sports Complex in Pueblo.

The Fury went up 4-0 in the second inning and kept tacking on insurance runs. They out-hit Platte Valley 11-2.

The Broncos picked up a pair of wins Friday, defeating No. 2 Dayspring Christian 4-1 and No. 3 Fowler 2-1.

Platte Valley will face No. 6 Denver Christian (18-9) or No. No. 8 Monte Vista (18-7) in the lower bracket’s third round at 12:30 p.m. Friday. The winner of that game moves on to Saturday’s finals.

    Resurrection Christian bounces back

Fourth-seeded Resurrection Christian emphatically bounced back from its first loss of the 3A state tournament a day earlier against top-seeded University.

The Cougars picked up a big 7-1 win against No. 6 Classical Academy in the second round of the lower bracket Saturday at University High School’s Tom Roche Field.

Resurrection Christian (19-9) will face fifth-seeded Montezuma-Cortez (23-5) in the lower bracket’s third round at 10 a.m. Friday at Butch Butler Field with the chance to move on to the semifinals later in the day.

The Cougars were in full control against The Classical Academy after going up 4-0 in the first two innings.

Resurrection Christian fell 5-2 to University in the championship bracket’s second round Friday.

Eaton falters in the lower bracket

For the first time in five years, Eaton won’t be hoisting the 3A state championship trophy.

The third-seeded Reds, who had won the previous four state titles, fell in the lower bracket’s second round 9-5 to fifth-seeded Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday at Butch Butler Field in Greeley.

After Eaton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Panthers quickly assumed control with four runs in the top of the second and two more runs in the third.

Montezuma-Cortez out-hit the Reds 10-5 and had one error, compared to four for Eaton.

Reds junior Everett Edinger had two RBI on 1-for-3 hitting.

After defeating sixth-seeded The Classical Academy in the first round Friday, Eaton suffered its initial loss of the double-elimination tournament later in the day, falling 8-0 against second-seeded Coal Ridge.

With the loss against Montezuma-Cortez, the Reds their season with a record of 20-8.

    Highland bows out

After going 1-1 during Day 1 on Friday, fifth-seeded Highland was unable to continue its run in the 2A state tournament at the Runyon Field Sports Complex in Pueblo.

The Huskies lost to No. 6 Denver Christian 13-9 in the second round of the lower bracket of the double-elimination tournament Saturday.

After falling behind 12-2 through the first four innings, Highland showed some late life, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth and five in the seventh. The Huskies ultimately were in too big of a hole to completely dig out.

On Friday, Highland defeated fourth-seeded Peyton 3-0 in the first round before falling to top-seeded Forge Christian 9-1 in the second round.

The Huskies wrapped up their season with a 20-8 record.

    Severance gets knocked out

A less-than-ideal 4A state tournament campaign came to an end for eighth-seeded Severance on Saturday morning at the Air Force Academy.

The Silver Knights fell 14-0 in five innings to No. 5 Palisade in the first round of the lower bracket Saturday. This loss came 24 hours after Severance suffered its initial loss in the eight-team double-elimination tournament, falling 15-0 in four innings against top-seeded Pueblo County.

With those losses, the Silver Knights ended their season with a 19-8 record.

Severance was immediately behind the 8-ball in its loss Saturday against Palisade. The Bulldogs led 11-0 after one inning and 14-0 after three. They out-hit the Silver Knights 14-2.

Sophomore Declan Moylett and senior Auggie Dominguez each had a double for Severance.

Valley unable to end its season

After making a surprising postseason run into the 3A state tournament, and hanging tough with top-seeded University in Round 1 on Friday, eighth-seeded Valley saw its season come to an end Saturday morning.

The Vikings suffered a 9-1 loss to fifth-seeded Montezuma-Cortez in the first round of the lower bracket at Butch Butler Field in Greeley.

Valley ended its season with a 13-14 record. It fell 5-4 to aforementioned University in the first round Friday.

    Dayspring Christian falls short

As the second seed in the 2A state tournament at the Runyon Field Sports Complex, Dayspring Christian was unable to extend its campaign past the opening weekend.

The Eagles fell 6-3 to sixth-seeded Denver Christian in the lower bracket’s first round Saturday morning at Andenucio Field in Pueblo.

The Thunder took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and never trailed. Dayspring trimmed the gap to 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the first and one in the third, but Denver Christian shut the Eagles out the rest of the way.

The Thunder added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
