‘Great sadness’ – Michael van Gerwen splits from wife and withdraws from darts tournament

Michael van Gerwen is taking a hiatus from darts after announcing he and his wife are separating after 11 years of marriage.

The Dutchman has said he has withdrawn from all upcoming tournaments and has requested privacy after posting the news on his social media accounts.

Many in the world of darts have commented how the great Van Gerwen hasn’t been himself this yearGetty Van Gerwen and Daphne have been married for 11 years and have two children

“With great sadness, I want to let you know that Daphne and I have decided to end our relationship,” said the three-time world darts champion.

“As a result, I have withdrawn from the upcoming tournaments.

“I am sorry to disappoint my fans, but I trust they will understand my decision.

“We are facing a difficult time and ask everyone to respect our privacy during this challenging period.”

Van Gerwen and Daphne have been together for 17 years, having begun dating in 2008 before tying the knot in 2014.

They have two children together, a daughter Zoe, 7, and son Mike, 5.

The news comes as the 36-year-old pulled out of the Dutch Darts Championship, where he was due to play his first match on Saturday night.

It also comes just days after the former world champion failed to quality for the Premier League Darts play-offs, with his opponent admitting Van Gerwen ‘didn’t look himself’.

The Green Machine – a seven-time Premier League winner – could only manage a fifth-place finish, missing out on a play-off spot with only the top four players in the standings progressing.

Van Gerwen needed to beat Nathan Aspinall in the quarter-finals on Thursday to seal a top-four spot, but was beaten by the Englishman who admitted the Dutch legend was ‘emotional’ and ‘giving up’ on stage.

Van Gerwen’s struggles this year have been well documented, with the Green Machine far from the levels of his previous brilliance.

He has already confirmed he will not play in the upcoming World Cup of Darts for Netherlands, and now it’s likely he will miss the World Matchplay at Blackpool’s iconic Winter Gardens in July.

Van Gerwen started off the year positively as he was beaten only by teenage prodigy Luke Littler in the World Championship final in January.

But he has yet to pick up a major TV title in 2025 and is suffering a real crisis of confidence.

And former PDC contender Colin Lloyd believes his time at the pinnacle of the sport is slowly fading.

“There are just far too many inconsistencies that have crept into his game over a period of time and unfortunately for him it’s getting a little bit more too often now,” he told talkSPORT.

Van Gerwen is now taking a break from dartsGetty

“I’m going to say it like this, he’s lost that fear factor now. He’s not the dominant player he once was.

“I’m certainly not putting him down because he’s a class act and a class fella, but you’ve got the likes of Littler, [Luke] Humphries, [Nathan] Aspinall, [Gerwyn] Price, people away from the Premier League at the moment, Jonny Clayton, people like that all want a piece of the action.”
