Hours after prisoner swap: Russia, Ukraine trade blows

Shafaq News/ OnSaturday, Russia and Ukraine intensified military operations, just hours aftercompleting their largest prisoner exchange since the war began in 2022.

Kyiv officialsreported that an early-morning barrage triggered fires and scattered debrisacross several residential areas of the capital, injuring at least eightpeople.

Meanwhile, Russia’sDefense Ministry confirmed that air defense systems intercepted 94 Ukrainiandrones across six regions, including bordering Belgorod and Bryansk, afterdowning 159 the day before.

Foreign MinisterSergei Lavrov pledged another response, describing the uptick in Ukrainiandrone activity as a “deliberate escalation.”

The exchange of firecame shortly after a significant diplomatic development. On May 23, Ukraineconfirmed the return of 390 detainees as part of a “thousand for a thousand”prisoner swap conducted at the Belarusian border, with additional exchangesexpected over the weekend.

Despite the deal,Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow of obstructing ceasefireefforts. “This delay is a mockery of the entire world,” he stated in a videoaddress. “It is time to act decisively.”

Zelenskyy alsocharacterized the Istanbul talks that led to the swap as yielding only oneresult: the release of prisoners, but no progress has been reportedtowards a ceasefire.

Today, 390 people are back home – both military and civilians. Tomorrow and the day after – the next stages will follow. The formula is “a thousand for a thousand.”What matters most is that Ukraine is bringing its people home. I thank everyone around the world who is helping.… pic.twitter.com/bIjIwOwo7w
