Semisonic, the popular ‘90s band best known for the hit single “Closing Time,” has decided to cancel its summer tour plans as bassist John Munson continues to recover from the stroke he had in February.
The band made the announcement on its social media accounts on Friday, May 23, posting the notice, “As John continues his recovery from the stroke he had in February, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our summer touring plans. We look forward to playing together before too long, and we thank everyone for their understanding and support.”

The statement was attributed to singer/guitarist Dan Wilson, Munson and drummer Jake Slichter.
The band was scheduled to play the Good Intentions summer tour with Toad the Wet Sprocket, Sixpence None the Richer and KT Tunstall.
Munson suffered a stroke on Feb. 23, according to a GoFundMe account established by a friend of his wife, Penny Munson, on the couple’s behalf.
“Although his prognosis is positive, he will be in acute rehabilitation for a length undetermined. This puts a huge strain on a family, especially self employed Artists. Let’s rally as a community that cares deeply for these people. They could really use our help! We have benefited over the years listening to John, maybe we can return the love. And thank so much!!!!” the post notes.
The GoFundMe account has surpassed its initial goal of $100,000, raising more than $142,200 to date, but it’s still accepting donation on Munson’s behalf.

Earlier this month, there was a benefit concert for the ailing musician called Munson Fest, held at the Fitzgerald Theater in Minneapolis featuring several local notable musicians, including Dan Wilson’s brother Matt Wilson and His Orchestra. Both Wilsons played with Munson in the pre-Semisonic band Trip Shakespeare during the 1980s.
Fans responded to the post on Instagram by wishing Munson and the band well.
“Love and healing ❤️? from Brazil. ?? Wish you guys the best. X,” wrote one.
“Sending all the best to John! ❤️,” added another.
“Sending so much love and light to the entire crew,” a third added.
Munson is the second notable musician from the Minneapolis music scene to suffer a stroke in the last few decades. Bob “Slim” Dunlap of the Replacements suffered a severe stroke in 2012 that left him bed-ridden until his death in December 2024.
