San Diego Foundation has awarded $2.1 million in grants to local nonprofits to expand access to mental and behavioral health care for children, youth, and families across the region.

“Mental health issues are the top reason youth are hospitalized in California,” said Mark Stuart, SDF president & CEO. “We’re supporting local organizations working directly with young people to ensure they get the help they need, when they need it.”

In addition to increasing access to care, the funding aims to address the region’s growing shortage of mental health professionals. San Diego County is expected to need 18,500 additional behavioral health workers by 2027, according to the San Diego Workforce Partnership.

Of the total funds, more than $1.2 million will go toward direct services. Another $925,000 will support workforce development through internships and stipends for students and trainees entering the mental health field.

    Selected 2024 Grantees Include:

Alliant Educational Foundation – $100,000: Services for families and stipends for doctoral students Casa de Amparo – $35,000: Services for foster youth Home Start Inc. – $50,000: Support for underserved families Interfaith Community Services – $125,000: Programs for homeless youth and intern stipends Mending Matters – $100,000: School-based mental health and internship support North County LGBTQ Resource Center – $125,000: Support for LGBTQ+ youth and intern stipends San Diego Youth Services – $125,000: Programs for vulnerable youth and workforce development Palomar Family Counseling Services – $125,000: Family counseling and support for licensed trainees (Full list available upon request or at SDFoundation.org)

Since 2017, SDF has invested $7.6 million in early childhood and family mental health initiatives through 128 grants. This funding is supported by the Guy Clum Early Childhood Fund and the Blasker-Rose-Miah Endowment Fund. Coastal Community Foundation also provided aligned support this year.

This work is part of SDF’s Fifty & Forward campaign, launched to mark the foundation’s 50th anniversary. The goal: grant $500 million to local nonprofits and raise $1 billion to strengthen the future of the region. To date, the campaign has granted $335 million.
