Man shot Thursday in Oakland dies from wounds; suspect arrested

OAKLAND — A man shot multiple times Thursday morning in the San Antonio district died early Friday from his wounds and a suspect has been arrested, authorities said.

The name of the 24-year-old man killed, who has addresses in San Francisco and Las Vegas, has not yet been released pending notification of his family.

The name of the suspect, a 43-year-old man arrested several hours after the shooting at his Oakland home after a standoff with police, has not yet been released.

Investigators are trying to determine a motive for the shooting, which happened about 11:30 a.m. outside in the 1300 block of 18th Avenue. Police don’t believe at this time that the suspect and victim knew each other.

The victim was able to make it around the corner before collapsing on the sidewalk in front of a business in the 1700 block of International Boulevard. He was taken to a hospital and died about 2 a.m. Friday, authorities said.

The suspect fled in a vehicle from the shooting scene and police were able to obtain the license plate with the help of a witness.

The vehicle was traced to the suspect’s home in the 2400 block of 25th Avenue and police descended there about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, eventually bringing in SWAT officers.

The suspect eventually came outside the residence and was taken into custody about 4:45 p.m., authorities said.

A search warrant was later served at the home and several guns and ammunition were recovered, authorities said.

The killing is the 32nd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time, police had investigated 31 homicides in the city.
