5 players GT should release ahead of IPL 2026 ft. Rashid Khan

Gujarat Titans were handed a 33-run thrashing by LSG, something that could impact their chances of staying at the top of the IPL 2025 points table. Shubman Gill and co. have been one of the best & consistent sides in this season, having won 9 out of 13 matches played so far.

While their top three have done most of the heavy lifting in terms of scoring runs, there are a lot of concerns related to the middle-order. Further, it is R Sai Kishore who has done more damage with the ball in the spin department than veteran Rashid Khan. Like all teams, GT will also be looking do some chopping and fine tuning to their squad to emerge as an even more formidable side in IPL 2026.

    Five players GT should release

    1. Rashid Khan

The Afghanistan spinner has been an integral part of GT ever since the team entered the tournament in 2022. However, his performance in IPL 2025 has been quite sub-par. Rashid has managed to take just 8 wickets from 13 games, and has been quite expensive – an economy rate of 9.38. Batters are able to outsmart Khan and take him to the cleaners easily – something that they had struggled to do in the previous editions. Perhaps the time has come for GT to let go of Rashid.

    2. Shahrukh Khan

The middle-order batter has hardly gotten any match time this season. Firstly, the trio of Sudharsan-Gill-Buttler have scored most of the runs for the team in this season. Sherfane Rutherford, who bats above SRK, has also been effective. All this has resulted in the Tamil Nadu batter getting very little time in the middle.

But looking at Shahrukh Khan’s records, he has never managed to go past scoring 200 runs in an IPL season till date. In this edition, he has scored 147 runs from 13 matches, with a highest score of 57 that came against LSG, albeit in a losing cause. GT can afford to release him, not because he lacks talent or is underperforming, but simply because he can find another team who can use his services better.

    3. Ishant Sharma

Make no mistake, the veteran pacer is still one of the best bowlers in the business – given that he can still bowl deliveries at rapid fast pace and consistent lengths. However, he is already 36 years old. And in IPL 2025, he has played only in 7 matches and has taken 4 wickets. He’s been quite expensive as well.

Given his age, it is better if GT release him ahead of IPL 2026 and instead hunt for a younger Indian pacer.

    4. Rahul Tewatia

The all-rounder has simply failed to deliver on expectations in this season. And this was very evident from GT’s game against LSG. While he has not bowled at all in this season, his contributions with the bat have been minimal. Like SRK, he too has not gotten much game time due to the heavy top-order. However, GT has no dearth of middle-order batters or finishers.

    5. Karim Janat

Karim has been underutilized by GT in IPL 2025. But that is quite understandable after he conceded 30 runs in just one over that he has bowled in this season. GT do not lack fast or medium pacing bowling options and hence it would be wise for the team to get rid of Janat. To put it in simpler words, the Afghan star could rather come of better use to some other teams who perhaps could play him regularly.
