The SEC is considering massive changes to conference championship weekend, per report

The SEC is reportedly mulling changes to its championship weekend in football, and naturally, the College Football Playoff is at the center of them.

With the expansion to 16 teams, the SEC in 2024 sent its top 2 teams to Atlanta for the conference title, as opposed to previous years where the top team in each division qualified. But, according to Yahoo Sports college football insider Ross Dellinger, some much bigger changes could be in store.

According to Dellinger, the SEC and Big Ten are discussing a proposal that would see the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th-place teams in each conference play each other in a tournament-style format to determine 2 automatic qualfiers for the Playoff. The games would be held on campus with the highest seed hosting.

This, of course, hinges on further enhancement of the Playoff selection process. One proposal centers around the SEC and Big Ten getting 4 automatic spots in the CFP while the Big 12 and ACC receive 2 each.

While Dellinger notes that each conference’s media rights agreement currently requires each conference’s top-seeded teams face each other in a conference championship game, the SEC is considering another option that includes the conference’s top 8 teams facing each other in a four-game tournament with a tie-in to Playoff qualifications.

It would make for an interesting prospect if either scenario came to life. But it’s just another day in the changing world of college football.
