talkSPORT betting tips – Best boxing bets and expert advice for Josh Taylor v Ekow Essuman

Former undisputed super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor (19-2, 13 KOs) makes his return to the ring at welterweight to take on Ekow Essuman (21-1, 8 KOs) in front of a home Glasgow crowd.

The Scot has enjoyed an excellent career, but the Tartan Tornado hasn’t fought since he was comprehensively outpointed by Jack Catterall 12 months ago and Taylor now has major questions to answer.

Essuman will be defending his WBO European welterweight title at the SSE Hydro on Saturday night and the Engine will be out to score the biggest success of his career.

Josh Taylor to win by decision @ 4/5

Tartan Tornado unlikely to blow European champion away

Saturday night’s Glasgow show sets up an intriguing European title contest between Josh Taylor and Ekow Essuman and it’s a fight of many possibilities.

Taylor is a former undisputed super-lightweight champion who has scored huge victories over Jose Carlos Ramirez, Regis Prograis, Viktor Postol and Ivan Baranchyk in an excellent career.

If the Tartan Tornado is able to produce the level he managed in any of those bouts then it is likely to be a dominant victory for the Scot.

However, the 34-year-old’s fall from grace commenced with a fortunate and underwhelming victory over Catterall in 2022 and it has been downhill since.

The Edinburgh fighter was beaten by Teofimo Lopez before Catterall turned the tables on the Scot in their rematch 12 months ago.

El Gato has since gone on to lose to Arnold Barboza Jr, which hasn’t done wonders for the form, and you wonder how much Taylor has left to give at this stage of his career.

The 34-year-old has opted to return at welterweight and the move to 147lbs is another concern.

Essuman hasn’t got the record to compete with a peak Taylor, but the Nottingham man is in the form of his career.

The 36-year-old has made two successful defences of his European title against Ben Vaughan and Owen Cooper and there are also good wins over domestic rivals Samuel Antwi and Chris Kongo on the Engine’s card.

Essuman was beaten by Harry Scarf in 2023, but that is the sole defeat on the Nottingham fighter’s card and he is certainly capable of causing a below-par Taylor problems.

It’s tricky to evaluate what level the Tartan Tornado will be able to reach on Saturday night, but it seems likely that it won’t be a performance of the standard which saw the Scot become an undisputed world champion.

Essuman may not have enough to shock Taylor in Glasgow, but the Engine can stay competitive and backing the Scot to win by decision looks the best value play.
