The College Football Playoff is expected to change its seeding structure ahead of the 2025 season.
According to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, CFP executives are scheduled for a call on Thursday where they expect to adopt a new straightforward seeding model for the 12-team CFP that “would feature a financial compromise.” According to Dellenger, the 4 highest-ranked conference champions would still see the same revenue distribution even if they weren’t among the top 4 seeds in the field.
The new model would immediately replace the existing one, which ensures a top-4 seed and an automatic bye to the 4 highest-ranked conference champions.
That structure was heavily criticized in the lead-up to and throughout the first 12-team Playoff. Oregon, Georgia, Boise State, and Arizona State earned the top 4 seeds in last year’s CFP after winning their respective conferences. All 4 schools lost their quarterfinal games to lower-seeded teams.
Oregon, the Big Ten champ, would have been the top overall seed regardless of structure. The Ducks went 12-0 during the regular season. But even people associated with Oregon were disappointed with the draw. They argued that having to face Ohio State so early in the bracket was a disservice.
Georgia, as the SEC champ, likely would have still garnered a top-4 seed as well. The Bulldogs lost to Notre Dame by 13 points in their opening game, though they were playing with a backup quarterback.
The conversation about seeding crystallized around the 3 and 4 spots, which went to Boise State out of the Mountain West and Arizona State out of the Big 12. The Broncos were ranked ninth in the CFP selection committee’s final ranking. The Sun Devils were ranked 12th.
Had the seeding structure gone by ranking only, the first round picture would have been as follows:
No. 5 Notre Dame vs. No. 12 Clemson No. 6 Ohio State vs. No. 11 Arizona State No. 7 Tennessee vs. No. 10 SMU No. 8 Indiana vs. No. 9 Boise StateOregon would have faced Indiana or Boise State. Georgia would have played the winner of Tennessee-SMU. Texas would have played the winner of Ohio State-Arizona State. And Penn State, as the 4-seed, would have faced either Notre Dame or Clemson.
When the field was announced last season, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart called the seeding process “unjust and unfair. He told ESPN during the selection show that not all conferences are created equal.
“It makes no sense in terms of guaranteed byes. If someone earns the right to be a seed, they should have an advantage by doing that,” Smart said. “There’s not really a great advantage the way it was done. I think that’s something they’ll have to look at in the future.”
And, it appears, they have done exactly that.
