Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill has shared a story about a fight with his close friend and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) opening batter Abhishek Sharma over a cricket bat. The right-handed batter said he was concerned about the bat breaking when Abhishek was getting close to a century.
Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma share a close friendship from playing together in domestic cricket. Notably, Abhishek made his international debut under Gill’s captaincy during India’s T20I tour of Zimbabwe last year. The left-handed batter scored a century in just his second match using Gill’s bat.
Shubman Gill opened up about his relationship with Abhishek Sharma. Gill recalled that he asked Abhishek to return his bat, which led to a bit of a tussle between the two.
"It actually started back in our U-16 days. Abhishek began playing with my bat - there's a story behind it," Gill said on the Gen Bold episode of JioHotstar.
"He was batting on 80 or 90 runs using my match bat, and I didn't want it to break, so I asked him to return it. We ended up having a bit of a fight over that! But whenever he asked for my bat, I always gave it to him - and he scored a lot of runs with it," he added.
The Way We Bat Is Not Exactly Similar - Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill said that his and Sai Sudharsan's batting styles are different, adding that their left-right combination gives them an advantage. He also mentioned their shared ability to outthink bowlers and opponents.
"I think the way we bat is not exactly similar, but the left-right combination helps. We both run very well between the wickets, and we’re the kind of players who like to outsmart the opponent – including the bowlers," Gill said.
"In T20 cricket, especially with the introduction of the Impact Player rule, that skill of outsmarting the opposition has declined a bit. But I think our team still does it really well. It's easy to swing freely on good cement wickets, but real skill lies in reading conditions, assessing the situation, and consistently putting up fighting totals – that, I believe, is the key to our success," he added.
Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Abhishek Sharma's Performances in IPL 2025
Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan have formed a dominant opening pair for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. They played a crucial role in the team’s success and qualification for the playoffs. Sudharsan is the leading run-getter with 617 runs in 12 innings at an average of 56.09 and a strike rate of 157.
Gill is in second place with 601 runs at an average above 60 and a strike rate of 155.69. Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma has had a less consistent season for SunRisers Hyderabad. The southpaw has managed 373 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 192.26. SRH have secured only four victories.
Gujarat Titans will take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their next match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday, May 22.
