More than 100,000 pounds of illegal fireworks were seized Wednesday, May 21 in Commerce, following an investigation into a licensed fireworks importer/exporter suspected of violating state laws and licensing regulations, Cal Fire announced.
The seizure was prompted by a report that the licensee was not complying with safety and storage requirements mandated by the Cal Fire Office of the State Fire Marshal. Officials said the fireworks were being stored and possibly distributed in violation of the terms of the operator’s license. Authorities Wednesday did not identify the licensee.
The operation involved a collaboration between the Cal Fire Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Task Force.
“As we approach the 4th of July and a typical increase in usage of illegal fireworks, this seizure should be a reminder of our zero tolerance to illegal fireworks in California,” State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant said in a statement.

Officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal activity related to fireworks.
In California, only fireworks with “Safe and Sane” seal are legal to use, and only in communities that allow them. Fireworks that explode, fly into the air, or move uncontrollably on the ground — including sky rockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles, aerial shells, and firecrackers — are considered illegal. Violators can face fines of up to $50,000 and up to one year in jail.
In another notable case, Gardena police last July seized more than 75 tons of illegal fireworks.
