Man United legend urges club to sign TEN players and build around two current stars

Dwight Yorke believes Manchester United will need a total rebuild this summer if they qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Red Devils head into their Europa League final clash with Tottenham knowing they can salvage their season by lifting a trophy at the Estadio San Mames in Bilbao.

It has been a trying first season at Old Trafford for Ruben Amorim, whose side currently sit 16th in the Premier League table, having overseen 13 league defeats since his arrival in November.

Despite this, he can transform United’s fortunes completely by delivering his first silverware with the club, which brings with it the bonus of qualification for next season’s Champions League.

In a similar boat are Spurs, who are desperate to end a 17-year trophy drought and relieve pressure on under-fire boss Ange Postecoglou.

With the north Londoners a place below them in the league table in 17th, their hopes of European football next term also depend on a win tonight.

And while the all-or-nothing clash is a golden opportunity for United to seal a return among Europe’s elite, former star Yorke claimed his old club would need to invest heavily if they achieve this outcome.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast alongside Ally McCoist and Alan Brazil, the ex-striker was asked for his thoughts ahead of the final.

He said: “I won’t say I’m overconfident, if I’m honest with you.

“I just think that United have got themselves into a position where I don’t think anyone would have given them any chance, certainly not based on the league performance at this point.

“However, we will take it – a final of significance to get us into the Champions League, as well as with a trophy, which then gives us a little bit of collateral to go forward and try to bring in players to then improve what has been a disastrous campaign so far.”

Yorke then admitted the Red Devils could require as many as 10 new players to transform their squad if they are to be competitive in next season’s Champions League.

The 53-year-old certainly knows a thing or two about European success, having been a key part of United’s treble-winning season in 1999, which included European glory, scoring 29 goals altogether.

And Yorke named just three members of their current squad who he feels would be capable of driving the club forward in Europe, with Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo getting his seal of approval.

When asked how many new players United would need to recruit, he replied: “I think you really couldn’t put a number on it. It seems that it would need a whole face-flip, if you’re asking me.

“I mean, there’s obviously one or two players in there that have obviously picked themselves, like the Brunos and the Garnachos, young players like that, and Amad.

“Those are the type of players you want going forward.

“But in terms of restructuring that football team, I would say it could be up to even 10 players, that they need to really compete at that level that they’re hoping to get in on the back of a European victory tonight.”

With tonight’s win-or-bust clash fast approaching, Yorke admitted his former club may be in need of a mass summer clearout, as he claimed a number of their current players have underperformed for too long.

The ex-Aston Villa and Blackburn frontman added: “Listen, we haven’t been good.

“And there’s players there that probably overstayed their time and they’ve been at the club far too long, and there hasn’t been any progress with these players being around.

“And it’s the same story year in, year out. I mean, it’s remarkable that we are in a final.

“But in terms of restructuring that football team and getting players in, I would say even as far as up to 10 players.”
