Former Team India chief selector MSK Prasad has opined that ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah should be the next Test captain following Rohit Sharma's retirement. Prasad and the other members of his former selection committee did not consider Shubman Gill for the captaincy in the five-match Test series in England.
According to several reports, Shubman Gill is a leading candidate for Test captaincy. However, he has limited experience as a captain. Gill led India in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe last year. The young batter also served as vice-captain during the 2025 Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE.
MSK Prasad picked Jasprit Bumrah as his choice for India’s Test captain, despite ongoing concerns about the pacer’s fitness. Prasad stated that Bumrah has already demonstrated strong leadership qualities. He added that Shubman Gill should gain experience as Bumrah’s deputy.
"My captain would be Jasprit Bumrah as he has already proven himself as a leader. As far my vice-captain is concerned, I would like Shubman Gill to gain some experience as Bumrah's deputy. In case you have a problem with Bumrah's fitness then my choice is KL Rahul," Prasad told PTI.
Bumrah has captained India on a few occasions. He led the Men in Blue to an emphatic victory against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 opener in Perth. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been captaining the Gujarat Titans in the IPL since the 2024 season.
It Would Be Unfair Not to Consider Jasprit Bumrah for Captaincy - Devang Gandhi
Former India opener Devang Gandhi said that Jasprit Bumrah should be considered for captaincy and added that Rishabh Pant deserves the vice-captaincy. Gandhi also mentioned that he would back six specialist pacers for the Test series in England.
"For captaincy, it would be unfair if you don't consider Bumrah for leadership. As far as Bumrah deputy goes, this is the time to show faith in Rishabh Pant as he has the best Test average in the current set-up. I would carry six specialist pacers in UK knowing that I have enough back-up for a five-match series," he said.
KL Rahul is My Choice for India Test Captain - Gagan Khoda
Jatin Paranjpe also said that Jasprit Bumrah is the ideal choice to captain India’s Test team, with Rishabh Pant as vice-captain. Meanwhile, Gagan Khoda backed KL Rahul as captain and would include Karun Nair as an additional batsman in the squad.
"There is no one more ideal than Jasprit Bumrah to lead the national team in traditional format. My vice-captain would be Rishabh Pant, who has had a good record in SENA countries. Pant and KL Rahul are the two batters with two Test hundreds on English soil on their previous tours," said Paranjpe.
"KL (Rahul) is my captain and I would prefer Karun Nair as an extra batter," said Khoda.
The India-England Test series is set to start on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. Shubman Gill has played just three Tests in England and scored a total of 88 runs, with a best score of 28. This series will present a significant challenge for him as a batter.
