King Charles III made it clear at a royal event Monday that his friendship with David Beckham is growing, in what royal observers say is a “clear rebuff” to his son Prince Harry amid feuds engulfing both their famous families.
At the Chelsea Flower Show, Charles warmly greeted Beckham and let everyone hear that he had sent the British soccer legend roses for his 50th birthday. The bonding between the monarch and the sports hero comes in the days after news leaked that Beckham’s oldest son, Brooklyn, and his daughter-in-law, Nicola Peltz, dined at the Montecito, California mansion of Harry and Meghan Markle, from whom Charles is estranged.
This Montecito dinner, where Harry and Brooklyn Beckham could presumably commiserate over being the struggling, self-exiled sons of famous powerful men, follows Brooklyn’s public rejection of his father’s 50th birthday celebrations, both the Daily Beast and the Daily Mail reported.

The king’s invitation to Beckham to attend his first-ever Chelsea Flower Show was “a very clear rebuff to his son,” coming after reports that Harry and Meghan were trying to “build ties” with Brooklyn and Nicola.
The king and his wife, Queen Camila, approached Beckham at the flower show, the Daily Mail reported. Beckham also was there to represent the King’s Foundation, Charles’ personal philanthropic organization, as an ambassador.
“Your Majesty, it’s so nice to see you,” Beckham said to Charles, who astonishingly asked if he had received the birthday present he sent, according to the Daily Mail.
“You got it, didn’t you?” Charles asked
“It was incredible,” Beckham beamed. “Thank you, it was very kind.”
Camilla added: “Nice to see you again, glad you got the roses.”
Beckham then told Camila about his recent birthday celebrations, which took place on both sides of the Atlantic and which kicked off with a star-studded party at Cipriani, the exclusive Italian restaurant in Miami, The Athletic reported. But Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Pletz, the daughter of billionaire investor Nelson Peltz, were notorious no-shows at the celebrations. Like Harry, Brooklyn Beckham has had a very public falling out with his birth family, including with his mother, fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.
Sykes reported that Brooklyn Beckham believes he is suffering from “generational trauma,” using language that will be familiar to those who have followed Harry and Meghan’s criticisms of Charles, his brother Prince William and the rest of the royal family.
Sources told the Daily Mail that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were “secretly supporting” Brooklyn and Nicola, seeing the similarities in their respective family feuds. Sykes also noted that there were other parallels between the family feuds: Both Meghan and Nicola have been blamed by some “for having turned once-favored sons against their families.”
Meanwhile, the royal family appears to be lending its support to David and Victoria Beckham in their family feud. Last year, the king invited the Beckhams to a high-profile dinner at his private mansion in Gloucester, the Daily Mail reported. The couple also were surprise guests at Buckingham Palace in December for a state banquet to mark the visit of the Emir of Qatar, signaling their rise in British social circles. Then, last week, Kate Middleton wore a suit design by Victoria Beckham for a British Fashion Council event.
There’s also been speculation that Beckham is aiming for a knighthood, while he and Charles reportedly bond over a shared love of gardening and making honey, according to the Daily Mail and The Athletic.
Beckham once was known to be good friends with Harry and was seen as having a good influence on the prince in his younger, wilder days. David and Victoria Beckham also were guests at Harry and Meghan’s 2018 wedding. But Beckham’s friendship with Harry reportedly soured after he and his wife accused the Beckhams of leaking stories about them to the media. The Beckhams denied the accusations.
