Peppa Pig is a rude brat – I hope Mummy and Daddy do better with the baby

In the world of children’s cartoons, it’s the equivalent of white smoke from the Vatican. Peppa Pig has a baby sister. Mummy Pig gave birth at 5.34 am to little Evie – named in honour of Mummy’s aunt). This landmark announcement follows the bombshell in February that Mummy Pig was expecting a third child, after Peppa and dinosaur-loving crybaby George.

Much like a new Pope appearing on the balcony at St Peter’s, Evie is to be revealed to her public amid great pomp. Her arrival was announced on Good Morning Britain and she will make her debut in an hour-long cinema special on May 30. All across the country, hardworking multiplex employees are gearing up for an influx of gooing, gagging Peppa fans (enough about the parents – the kids are sure to be excited, too).

But as Peppa-heads everywhere rejoice over the expansion of the world’s most famous porcine dynasty, it is worth taking a moment to consider what this all means. Not for us, but for Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig, who – let’s be brutally honest – could have done a better job with the two children they already have.

Forget Dennis the Menace, forget Tracy Beaker – Peppa is the naughtiest child to ever have her own daytime TV show, and many parents have gone off Little Miss Piggy and her brattish ways.

Yes, I’ve said it. Peppa’s a brat – and a poor reflection on Mummy and Daddy Pig and their child-rearing abilities. Let’s begin with her track record in fat shaming the unfortunate Daddy Pig.

Sure, he’s a man – sorry, pig – of a certain age. Obviously, he’s going to be a little porky. But there’s no need for Peppa to continuously bang on about it – for instance, by making the password to her tree house “Daddy’s Big Tummy”. Or what about the time this dutiful husband and father of two accompanied his family on a picnic only to be denied a delicious slice of cake when a wasp chased him?

While the experience was deeply traumatising for Daddy Pig, Peppa could only see the funny side, especially when the strawberry treat ended up in a pond, gratefully scoffed by the local ducks. As one parent wrote on the website Common Sense Media, “Instead of helping or worrying for him, Peppa, George, and Mummy Pig are only like ‘It doesn’t matter, Daddy Pig will be okay anyways. We don’t need to waste our time caring for him,’ and then they walk away.”

She isn’t any more generous to her schoolmates. One of her catchphrases is “I’m not your friend, and I don’t like you anymore” – a horrible thing to say to a child, even if that child is also a zebra. Plus, she takes huge joy in the failure of others – as demonstrated when she called up Suzie Sheep to ask if she could whistle. Peppa is unable to whistle and was delighted when Suzie she said couldn’t either. But when it turns out that she, in fact, could, Peppa hung up the phone.

Whistle-shaming your best pal is not an example anyone would wish their child to follow. Nor would you want them jumping in muddy puddles – a craze among the under-10s that Peppa is credited with instigating.

More generally, she comes across as unpleasant and wilful. There’s nothing wrong with knowing your own mind, but surely one of a parent’s duties is to impress upon your child the importance of kindness to others. Peppa, though, regards the world as her piggy oyster – and it is increasingly putting parents off.

“Peppa is extremely rude and isn’t a good model for how a kid should act,” goes another review on Common Sense Media – reflecting views you will hear among any parents with Peppa-loving kids. “There’s a lot of disrespect, and rude comments thrown around that don’t have any consequences. A specific episode included two grandfather parents arguing about a greenhouse, insulting one another. Another episode Peppa was upset with her friend and was rude to the friend with no interference by her parents.”

With little Evie redeem Peppa in the eyes of disillusioned parents? The creators of the cartoon probably aren’t much worried either way. The Peppa franchise was estimated in 2022 to generate annual revenues of $1.7 billion– and was bought by toy giant Hasbro for $4 billion in 2019. This left one of Peppa’s co-creators, Phil Davies with an estimated net worth of £45 million. Talk about laughing all the way to the piggy bank.

Evie will no doubt be a delightful addition to the Peppaverse. But for Mummy and Daddy Pig, it’s an opportunity to buck up their act. They’re on their third kid now, meaning the time has passed for these piggies to play the silly sausage. Evie could be everything Peppa is not: a sweet, kind child who has all sorts of exciting adventures on screen but without the side-serving of fat-shaming, bullying and playground toxicity.

Speaking on behalf of every single parent in the universe, it is my solemn duty to declare that we’re done with Peppa’s tiresome huffing and puffing and look forward to Evie providing a better example. Fingers crossed, this little piggy will be a lot nicer than her big sister.
