NC man accused of threatening ICE agents, CMPD officers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A North Carolina man accused of threatening local law enforcement and federal immigration agents is out of jail.

Johnathan Thomas, 27, appeared before a judge Monday on a charge of threatening to assault or murder federal law enforcement officers.

Investigators say Thomas has a history of threatening law enforcement. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were some of the latest targets, along with ICE agents.

An affidavit details allegations that the North Carolina native called CMPD last week, told officers he's a veteran, and then threatened to kill ICE agents and CMPD officers if immigration-related arrests continue. The document includes Thomas' alleged threat to come to Charlotte with body armor, ammunition and night vision devices to kill law enforcement officers if he saw them making ICE arrests along Albermarle Road.

He allegedly threatened to "shoot them all" if he saw any more arrests happen, and that he would "Swiss cheese" the officers. Investigators believe he was referencing the May 12 ICE arrests on Albermarle Road near a CMS campus.

Queen City News tried calling the number investigators said Thomas used to contact CMPD, and we were sent to voicemail.

The affidavit explains additional threats, including claims Thomas had explosives around his house, saying, "If you feel like getting a warrant for anything I've said today, I hope it's worth somebody's life."

Thomas is said to have mentioned the Shannon Park shooting, where four law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in April of 2024, warning he "could do a whole lot better than that."

Investigators say Thomas has previously followed CMPD officers in their patrol cars while on duty and sent obscene photos to the Davidson County Sheriff's Office because he was upset with the sheriff's political ads. Thomas has pending charges related to that incident.

Homeland Security Investigations agents took three rifles and a handgun from Thomas' home following his arrest last week.

If convicted in connection with these threats, he could spend up to 10 years in prison.
