OC boys volleyball teams to compete for first CIF State championships

The quest for the first CIF State boys volleyball championships begins Tuesday.

This is the first season for CIF State boys volleyball finals. Southern California Regional playoffs started in 2009. The California high school boys volleyball season ended with regional finals.

The first CIF State boys volleyball finals are at Fresno City College on May 31. Girls volleyball has had CIF State championships since 2003.

With six teams from CIF Southern Section Division 1 participating in the eight-team CIF Southern California Division I Regional, of course there are first-round rematches Tuesday.

SoCal Regional Division I first-round matches Tuesday include Beckman at Mira Costa, and Redondo at Huntington Beach.

Mira Costa beat Beckman 3-0 in the first round of CIF-SS Division 1 pool play on April 30. Huntington Beach beat Redondo in the second round of CIF-SS Division 1 pool play on May 6.

Also in SoCal Regional Division I on Tuesday, Corona del Mar plays at Carlsbad and Newport Harbor plays at Torrey Pines. Carlsbad defeated Torrey Pines in the CIF San Diego Section Open Division final.

CIF-SS Division 2 champion Mater Dei is home Tuesday against San Diego St. Augustine in SoCal Regional Division II. St. Augustine won the CIF San Diego Section Division 1 championship.

CIF-SS Division 3 champion Tesoro is home against San Diego Canyon Crest Academy on Tuesday in SoCal Regional Division II.

Sage Hill, CIF-SS Division 4 champion, is at home Tuesday against Fresno Sanger West in SoCal Regional Division III. CIF-SS Division 6 champion El Toro is at home against Santa Ynez on Tuesday in SoCal Regional Division III.

CIF-SS Division 5 champion Kennedy is at Woodland Hills Taft on Tuesday in Division III.

Only CIF-SS champions of divisions 2-9 are invited to play in the SoCal Regional. If a CIF-SS divisional champion declines the invitation, a CIF-SS division runner-up is invited.

Brea Olinda lost to San Gabriel Academy in the CIF-SS Division 7 final, but because San Gabriel Academy is not playing in the SoCal Regional, Brea Olinda received an invitation. Brea is at home against Los Angeles Wilson on Tuesday in Division IV.

All matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Spectator tickets for regional matches can be purchased exclusively at GoFan.co for $9 for adults and $5 for students, children and adults 65 and older.
