Sports Digest: Ukiah High Softball comes up short in NBL Redwood Championship

By George Hasler

Ukiah High Softball Wildcats lost on a walk-off to the Piner Prospectors in the bottom of the seventh 2-1 on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at the Healdsburg Varsity softball field. The winning run was knocked in by Prospector Genavieve De Mauro which ended a spectacular pitchers duel. The defeat ended Ukiah´s attempt to three-peat a share of the NBL Redwood Division in softball.

Both pitchers were sensational in going the distance Ukiah´s Taylor Allen scattered six hits while only walking two. Pinerś Mialynn Membrilla struck out 10 and allowed only one run while collecting the win. Both pitchers had tremendous command in locating their pitches allowing only weak contact for the most part.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Cambria Weerts singled in a run for Piner to break the deadlock. The Wildcats evened the score in the top of the sixth with a two out double by Ann Marie Brown whose shot in left field missed a homer by less than a foot. Brownś double scored Zoey Brown, who stole two bases in the game, and reached base three at bats. These runs set-up the dramatic ending with Piner loading the bases with no outs in the seventh. The Wildcats were forced to pull their infield and outfield in to cut off a potential winning run. After a fine effort by Wildcat catcher Kaloni Brown, who caught a foul pop-up to record the first out. Allen quickly got ahead on the count 0 and two, and for a moment it looked like the Wildcats might get out of the inning, but De Mauro delivered a game-ending line drive single to right center to end the game. Mokee James had a great hitting day for Ukiah going three for three with three singles.

The Wildcats quality performance came as no surprise as Ukiah won 8 of their final 10 league games and finished in second place to Piner with a 10-2 regular season record. Head Coach Rylie Williams celebrated five seniors´ contributions to the softball program last week. The five departing seniors are Makenzie Roberts, Aliyah Rosario,Tahitiana James, Sevillita Marquez and Addy Gordon. The Wildcats season will continue as they earned an NCS Division IV bid to face Salesian College Preparatory on Tuesday, May 20 at 5 p.m. in Richmond.
