Regional baseball roundup: Nine local teams punch tickets to state tournaments

Class 2A-5A regional baseball tournaments took place this past week with the winner of each classification’s eight regions advancing to state tournament play, which kicks off this weekend.

Local spectators will have plenty to keep an eye on this weekend, and likely next week, as nine out of 10 area regional participants advanced to state tournament play.

    Here is a look at this past weekend’s regional action.

    FRIDAY

    Class 4A

    Roosevelt falls inches short, in Pueblo: By the slimmest of margins, 16th-seeded Roosevelt fell shy of pulling off a huge upset and qualifying for the state tournament. The Rough Riders defeated No. 17 Silver Creek 4-1 in the first game of the regional at Runyon Field Sports Complex before falling to top-seeded Pueblo County 1-0 in the regional final. In the first game, Roosevelt and Silver Creek were tied at 1 until the Rough Riders scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth. Senior James Salakielu led Roosevelt’s balanced offense, hitting 2 for 3 with two RBI and a double. Junior Brady Mylander was effective on the mound, allowing one earned run on six hits, striking out five and walking one in 6 2/3 innings. The Rough Riders dropped the regional final despite out-hitting Pueblo County 3-1. The Hornets scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Israel Castillo pitched all six innings for Roosevelt, allowing one earned run on one hit, striking out one and walking two. The Rough Riders concluded their season with a 19-6 record.

    3A

    Top-seeded University dominates, in Greeley: University, seeded first out of 32 postseason teams, spared any dramatics as it defeated No. 32 Lincoln 14-0 in five innings in the first game of its regional campaign and topped No. 16 Manitou Springs 16-1 in four innings in a regional title game. The Bulldogs out-hit Lincoln 8-0 in the first game. University’s pitching duo of senior Preston Natividad and junior Joel Ramirez was nearly perfect, combining to allow no runs on no hits, striking out 11 and walking one. Senior Will Korby led a balanced Bulldogs offense, hitting 1 for 2 with three RBI and a home run. The Bulldogs out-hit Manitou Springs 15-1 in the regional final. Junior Gage Viken pitched all four innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit, striking out three and walking one. Viken also excelled at the plate, hitting 3 for 4 with four RBI and a double. Natividad hit 2 for 3 with three RBI, a double and two runs. University extended its win streak to 14 and improved to 22-3 overall. The Bulldogs will face eighth-seeded Valley (13-12) to open the state tournament at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Butch Butler Field in Greeley.

    Dayspring Christian rolls on, in Greeley: Second-seeded Dayspring Christian’s offense looked sharp, as the Eagles defeated No. 31 Sedgwick County 11-2 in the first regional game followed by a 13-3 win in five innings against No. 18 Burlington in the regional final. Sophomore Gavin Bohl led Dayspring in the first game, hitting 2 for 4 with three RBI and a double. Seniors Gage Davis and Josiah Rodriguez had two RBI apiece. The pitching duo of Rodriguez and sophomore Owen Steward combined to allow two earned runs on five hits, striking out 18 and walking five. The Eagles out-hit Burlington 15-4 in the regional title game. Senior Jeremiah Garza led the way, hitting 2 for 3 with four RBI. Bohl hit 2 for 2 with three RBI, two runs and a double. Senior Gage Davis pitched all five innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits, striking out five and walking three. Dayspring improved to 21-3 overall and has now won 11th consecutive games. The Eagles are seeded second in the state tournament and will face No. 7 Platte Valley (16-9) in the first round at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Runyon Field Sports Complex’s Andenucio Field in Pueblo.

    SATURDAY

    4A

    Windsor advances, in Windsor: Sixth-seeded Windsor remained one step ahead of its regional tournament foes, defeating No. 27 Fort Morgan 9-4 and No. 11 Grand Junction 5-2. In the first game, the Wizards led 4-0 before Grand Junction scored three runs in the third and one more in the fourth to tie up the game. Windsor responded with five runs in its final three offensively innings. Seniors Eastin Hubbard and Ethan Fillinger each had two hits and a RBI to lead the Wizards’ offense. Windsor was red hot out the gate in the regional title game against Grand Junction. The Wizards led 4-0 in the top of the first inning and kept the Tigers in check the rest of the game. Senior Thomas Tripp hit 1 for 3 with two RBI for Windsor. Fellow senior Izaak Haro went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a RBI. Junior Wyatt Gustafson pitched all seven innings, allowing two unearned runs on six hits, striking out nine and walking none. The Wizards improved to 19-6 overall and will face fifth-seeded Palisade in the state tournament’s first round at noon Friday at the Air Force Academy.

    Severance hangs tough, in Broomfield: Despite being the 21st seed in the 32-team bracket, Severance snagged a regional title and punched its ticket to this week’s state tournament. The Silver Knights defeated No. 12 Lutheran 8-7 in the first game before knocking off fifth-seeded regional hosted Holy Family 6-3 in the regional final. Severance led most of the game against Lutheran before giving up four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to fall behind 7-6. The Silver Knights bounced back with two runs in the top of the seventh to seize the win. Sophomore Declan Moylett paced the offense, hitting 1 for 4 with three RBI, a run and a home run. Senior Kolton Beidleman hit 3 for 3 with three runs and a solo home run. Severance started fast against Holy Family, leading 3-0 after one inning and 5-0 after three, never giving up the lead. Beidleman hit 2 for 4 with three RBI and another home run. Moylett also had a home run, hitting 2 for 4. Moylett pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, striking out five and walking four. The Silver Knights (19-6) earned the eighth seed in the 4A state tournament. They’ll face top-seeded Pueblo County (23-2) in the first round of the state tournament at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Air Force Academy.

    3A

    Valley scores major upset, in Denver: Being a lower seed in the 32-team bracket and belonging in the same regional bracket as the second overall seed didn’t faze No. 18 Valley. The Vikings topped No. 15 Alameda 8-6 in the first round before earning a big upset in the regional final, defeating second-seeded regional host Colorado Academy 5-4 in an extra inning. In the first game, Valley jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the fourth and held on late. Senior Andrew Renken led the way, hitting 2 for 4 with three RBI, a run and a double. Senior Anthony Soliz went 3 for 3 with a run and a RBI. In the dramatic regional title game, Valley erased a nearly game-long 2-0 deficit with a run in the bottom of the sixth and another in the seventh. After Colorado Academy scored two runs in the top of the extra inning, the Vikings responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to win in walk-off fashion. Juniors Trent Mestas and Seth Kissler led a balanced Valley offense with two hits and one RBI apiece. Kissler pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, striking out six and walking four. The Vikings improved to 13-12 overall with the pair of wins. They will face another daunting challenge when they open their state tournament campaign, as the eighth seed, against top-seeded University (22-3) at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Butch Butler Field in Greeley.

    Eaton shuts out foes, in Eaton: Eaton earned a pair of shutout victories in its two regional tournament victories. The fourth-seeded Reds defeated No. 29 La Junta 7-0 and No. 20 Basalt 8-0. Eaton out-hit La Junta 9-3 and was in firm control after going up 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Cooper Nider led the Reds, hitting 1 for 3 with two RBI and a double. Juniors Everett Edinger and Vinnie Juarez each had two hits, a double and one RBI. Eaton’s pitching duo of junior Austin Edelmon and senior Cash Rinker combined to allow no runs on three hits, striking out 11 and walking five. The Reds scored four runs in each the third and fourth innings of their win against Basalt. Junior Malaki Dalpra hit 1 for 3 with three RBI, two runs and a double. Junior Greyson Clingan hit 3 for 3 with two RBI. Junior Gunnar Garrison pitched all seven innings for Eaton, allowing no runs on four hits, striking out an impressive 18 batters and walking none. He averaged nearly three strikeouts per inning, striking out all but nine of the batters he faced. The Reds extended their win streak to eight games and improved to 19-6 overall. As the third seed, they will open their state tournament campaign against No. 6 The Classical Academy (19-6) at noon Friday on University High School’s Tom Roche Field.

    Resurrection Christian cruises to state, in Johnstown: Sixth-seeded Resurrection Christian couldn’t have been more dominant in its two regional tournament games, defeating No. 27 Arvada 15-0 in four innings and No. 22 Alamosa 9-0. The Cougars out-hit Arvada 14-0 in the first game. Sophomore Braedyn Budd pitched a near-perfect four-inning outing, striking out six and walking one. Senior Charley Wilson led Resurrection Christian, offensively, hitting 1 for 2 with three RBI and a run. Fellow Cougars senior Bennett Ruby went 3 for 3 with two RBI. In the equally dominant second game, the Cougars out-hit Alamosa 14-0. Senior Vaughn Green pitched a seven-inning, complete-game no-hitter, striking out 14 and walking three. Wilson and junior Maddox Sessions each had a hit, a run and two RBI. Sophomore Vincent Fuller went 3 for 4 with a run. Resurrection Christian improved to 17-8 and is the fourth seed in the 3A state tournament. It will face No. 5 Montezuma-Cortez (21-4) at noon Friday at Butch Butler Field.

    2A

    Highland shines offensively, in Ault: Sixth-seeded Highland was in a rhythm offensively the entire day, defeating No. 27 Buena Vista 11-3 before knocking off No. 11 Las Animas 10-0 in six innings in the regional final. In the first game, the Huskies shook off a brief 1-0 deficit, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first and six more in the second. Highland seniors DJ Rogers and John Bingley had two RBI apiece. Rogers went 2 for 3 with a home run, while Bingley went 3 for 3 with two runs. The Huskies were in firm control from the beginning of the regional title game, leading 6-0 after one inning. They out-hit Las Animas 14-5. Junior Stetson Hendren hit 2 for 4 with three RBI, a double and a run. Rogers and freshman Rowley McEachron had two RBI apiece. Bingley pitched all six innings, allowing no runs on five hits, striking out eight and walking two. Highland improved to 19-6 and earned the fifth seed in the 2A state tournament at Hobbs Field at the Runyon Field Sports Complex in Pueblo. The Huskies face No. 4 Peyton (20-1) at noon Friday.

    Platte Valley powers through, in Kersey: Eighth-seeded Platte Valley picked up a pair of hard-fought regional wins on its home field, defeating No. 25 Bishop Machebeuf 7-3 and ninth-seeded Limon 10-6 in the regional final. The Broncos jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first-round game, keeping Bishop Machebeuf at arm’s length the rest of the way. Senior Hudson Flummerfelt hit 3 for 3 with two RBI, two runs and two doubles. Senior Dagan Gomez pitched six innings for Platte Valley, allowing two earned runs on six hits, striking out two and walking three. The Broncos won the regional final in similar fashion, leading 3-0 after one inning and 9-2 after four. Flummerfelt remained red hot at the plate, hitting 4 for 4 with four RBI, three doubles and three runs. Junior Hazen Weber pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, striking out seven and walking five. Platte Valley improved to 16-9 overall. As the seventh seed in the 2A state tournament, the Broncos will take on No. 2 Dayspring Christian (21-3) in the first round at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Andenucio Field in the Runyon Field Sports Complex in Pueblo.
