What’s in a Name? Clearing up confusion about the Union Colony Civic Center
As chair of the Union Colony Civic Center Advisory Board, I was gratified by recent City Council approval to conduct a community survey to determine interest in renaming our premiere entertainment arts venue. That action resulted in social media posts that might tend to confuse our true intent and objective. Let’s be perfectly clear!
The center’s mission is to “strive through its programming for excellence in entertaining, educating and cultivating audiences of all ethnicities, ages and socio-economic backgrounds, and to assist community arts organizations in accomplishing the same.”
The Advisory Board “functions through direct citizen involvement to assist, support and advise the city with areas of programming, events and policies for the UCCC.”
Greeley’s population has almost doubled since the center was built in 1988. One can’t deny the expansion in the West, the revitalization of the downtown and the community’s ever changing diversity, age and identity.
Don’t be confused! A name change is not an attempt to change history or resurrect or remedy the past. It’s not emotionally driven. Instead, it is an objective, purposeful attempt by our board to fulfill our mandated mission and vision. Look around, names change all the time! The survey’s sole intent is to ask our growing community if a 38-year-old city asset should more accurately reflect its purpose and context to residents and visitors alike.
This summer, the survey will circulate throughout the city and surrounding communities. Reject the noise on social media — share your thoughts on the survey!
I urge the community to enthusiastically fill out the survey that the City Council has approved. Tell us if you want a name for our venue with an identity and purpose that reflects present day Greeley.
