Security operation targets Islamic State cell in Aleppo

The Aleppo Security Directorate, in cooperation with the General Intelligence Service, carried out a raid targeting a hideout where a cell affiliated with the Islamic State group was stationed on Saturday, May 17.

The operation resulted in the arrest of one member of the cell, while efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining members, according to the Syrian Ministry of Interior, announced via its Facebook page.

The clashes accompanying the operation led to the death of one member of the General Security Forces before the patrol was able to storm the site, where they seized explosive devices, a suicide vest, and several uniforms belonging to the General Security Forces that were in the possession of the cell members, according to the ministry.

Security sources confirmed the continuation of their operations to monitor and prevent any “terrorist activity,” as described, and to persist in efforts to ensure security and stability across all areas within Syrian territory.

A reporter from Enab Baladi in Aleppo stated that the operation took place in the al-Haidariyah area, in eastern Aleppo neighborhoods, and confirmed that one member of the Islamic State group was arrested, adding that the operation is still ongoing.

The reporter clarified that the General Security member who was killed in the clashes is Mohammad Hijazi, from the town of Ming in northern Aleppo countryside.

The reporter also confirmed that a member of the cell detonated himself during the raid, without further details.

The Islamic State group had attacked the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, after his meeting with US President Donald Trump in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

The group considered in the editorial of its weekly newspaper, Al-Naba, that the meeting between Trump and al-Sharaa clarified the latter’s doctrinal conflict with the Islamic State, rather than a partisan political disagreement.

It mentioned that billions from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with Turkish commitments, convinced Trump to carve out time from his schedule to meet with al-Sharaa, giving him a “tremendous opportunity,” while the latter only possesses his “obsession with power,” according to the group.

The group accused al-Sharaa of replacing “the religion of Ibrahim” (referring to Islam) with the “Abraham Accords.”

It summarized what it called Trump’s “impositions” on al-Sharaa, which include fighting the Islamic State and tightening the grip on its fighters in prisons of northeastern Syria.

On another note, the group called on foreign fighters affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Defense to join its cells in the countrysides, considering that al-Sharaa exploited them to serve his project.
