Capcom released the very first Resident Evil video game in 1996. The survival horror game, which came out on the PlayStation 1, was so popular that it spawned an entire video game franchise – encompassing eight mainline games and a series of remakes and spinoffs.
It also led to the Resident Evil movies, starring Milla Jovovich. The original films came out between 2002 and 2017, though The Final Chapter didn’t really turn out to be the final chapter. In 2021, the franchise was rebooted with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which adapted the first and second video games. Now – surprise, surprise – there’s another reboot in the works: this time from the director of Barbarian.

Here’s everything we know so far about the new Resident Evil movie, including when it’s coming out, cast details and what fans can expect from the story.
No title has been announced yet, but with the film slated for 2026, we should have one before too long.
What is the release date for the new Resident Evil movie?
The new Resident Evil reboot movie is expected to hit theaters on Sept. 18, 2026. According to IMDB, it’s in pre-production stages, though a brief synopsis has been revealed.

As per IMDB, the new Resident Evil movie “follows a hapless courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. He soon finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak and must fight through hordes of mutated creatures to survive.”
If that sounds familiar to fans of the video games, it’s on purpose. The film’s director Zach Creggor said he wants it to have the same feeling players get as they’re advancing through a game.
“There’s a moment that comes in almost every Resident Evil game where you find yourself in a dark passageway, your health is almost zero and there’s no way around,” he said to a live audience at CinemaCon 2025. “You have to go through but you know there’s something awful for you in the darkness.
“That is a thrill that the Resident Evil games have perfected. My movie will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.”
Who’s directing the new Resident Evil movie?
The director is none other than Zach Creggor, best known for 2022’s Barbarian. Anyone who’s seen the movie knows Creggor can do horror, and will most certainly take the Resident Evil reboot in that direction.
While the original Resident Evil movies were billed as horror/action, some fans of the video games claim they lean heavily on the action side of things. “I think an actually horrifying RE movie with only a few zombies, heavy on atmosphere and cinematics would be hugely successful and well-liked by the fan base,” wrote Reddit user aneasynumber back in 2022.
This might be something Creggor can deliver on. He co-wrote the new script with Shay Hatten, who’s known for John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) and Army of the Dead (2021). According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s “decidedly on the horror track,” but also has elements of a wilderness survival thriller.

Only one cast member has been tentatively announced for the new Resident Evil, and that’s Euphoria’s Austin Abrams. The 28-year-old played Ethan Daley in the hit HBO show, and has also appeared in The Walking Dead (2015-2016), Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019), Chemical Hearts (2020) and Wolfs (2024), among other projects.
Abrams isn’t yet confirmed for the movie, but already has a relationship with Creggor as he acted in the director's upcoming horror movieWeapons; set to release on Aug. 8, 2025. If he is indeed cast for the Resident Evil reboot, he’ll take the starring role.
How to watch the new Resident Evil movie
The new Resident Evil is still in early stages of production, but already has a set release date of Sept. 18, 2026. Fans can catch it in theaters or wait until it hits streaming, likely at the tail end of 2026.
