Arizona Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez will head to the 15-day injured list Friday with shoulder inflammation as the team called up right-handed relievers Christian Montes De Oca and Scott McGough.
The D-backs also announced they optioned lefty reliever Joe Mantiply to Triple-A Reno, which already came across the team’s transactions page.
Montes De Oca is a 6-foot-4, 230-pound reliever who would make his MLB debut. The 25-year-old has thrown 19 innings with a 2.37 ERA, 17 strikeouts and four walks. He’s allowed one earned run in his last 10 outings.
He brings some length to the bullpen with 19.0 innings pitched in 12 appearances.
What has gone wrong for D-backs’ Eduardo Rodriguez so far in 2025?
As for Rodriguez, he hadn’t put together a quality start — at least six innings with three or fewer earned runs — since April 11.
Rodriguez gave up four earned runs in 4.0 innings (76 pitches), striking out four and walking three Wednesday in a win over the San Francisco Giants.
It got the point that before the dicey 8-7 win, the D-backs purposefully lined up stretched-out reliever Ryne Nelson to be ready in case Rodriguez struggled again, CEO and president Derrick Hall told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta.
“This is Captain Obvious … Just something is not right with him,” D-backs CEO and president Derrick Hall said Thursday of Rodriguez’s troubling trend. “I don’t think it’s necessarily delivery, arm angle. I’m not sure. I’m not the pitching expert, pitching coach, but something is not right. We’ve got to figure that out first.”
The spotlight continues to shine on the lefty after he missed most of his first year with Arizona in 2024 due to injury. Since returning toward the end of the year, he has yet to look like the pitcher the D-backs signed to a four-year, $80 million deal two offseasons ago.
With health at least on his side in 2025, command is Rodriguez’s general issue.
His fastball has failed him this year. Per Sports Info Solutions’ pitch value statistic, it rates at a -4.9, the second time in his career it’s been a negative (-0.2 last season). In 2023 with the Detroit Tigers, that pitch value was a 7.0.
