Found Boss Unpacks Gabis Series-Ending Confession

Found took fans on a rollercoaster ride in Season 2, starting with Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) on the run, his eventual arrest, and the hunt for his accomplice. Gabi (Shanola Hampton) also managed to get Sir's biological sister, Lena (Daniel Savre) into handcuffs by the end of the Season 2 finale, but the twists didn't stop there.

Gabi went to the press for a briefing on M&A's latest case and told all of the reporters gathered outside the police station that she held Sir captive in her basement for nine months. The police had already decided not to pursue charges for Gabi earlier in the season because, without Sir's corroboration of Gabi's story, there was no way a prosecutor could pull off the win. Gabi has now taken the matter out of the police's hands and put her fate in the hands of the public.

It was always important to Gabi to atone for what she had done to Sir. What happens to M&A now that the secret is out of the bag? We may never know because NBC made the decision last week not to bring Found back for Season 3. That means fans will also be left in the dark about who attacked Sir in prison and left him for dead at the end of the finale.

Parade caught up with Found executive producer Nkechi Okoro Carroll before the cancellation news was unveiled and she helped us unpack what she could of what wound up being the series finale.

Let’s start with that last scene with Gabi confessing to the press that she’s a kidnapper. Why was that the last image you wanted for this season? That moment had been there since the pitch [for the show]. I always knew we would end Season 2 that way because it is a requirement of her healing journey. She’s really committed to healing. She has aired her sins to bare to her team. She spent all season looking for atonement and trying to heal and to really break the metaphoric chains that Sir still had on her, even though she wasn’t in the cabin anymore. It’s 20 years later. She finally realized that if she’s going to really heal and really break this hold that Sir has on her, it requires no more masks. It requires no more hiding. It requires the whole world seeing her for who she is, forgiving her, and then she can truly start the healing process. Otherwise, there would always be something that Sir could hold over her. There would always be a secret that bonded them, and she was adamant that she needed her atonement. It begins with her forgiving herself, and there was no way for her to do that if she didn’t lay her sins bare.

What does penance look like for Gabi? The police have taken jail time off the table, or at least they did earlier in the season. Does this confession change that? I will say that Gabi isn’t looking for special treatment or shortcuts. She confessed in the way that she did so that there could be no question of her guilt. What does that mean in terms of consequences? Everybody may have different thoughts on that and what her consequences should look like. For Gabi, specifically, she’s not looking for shortcuts. She did what she did to finally be the person that’s like, “This is what makes me different from the rest of them. And this is a legitimate confession. I’m willing to pay for my crimes.”

Sir also ends the season in a precarious situation. What can you say about how he ended up injured in that jail cell?It turns out there were a lot of motivations and a lot of suspects, including Sir himself, that could potentially be the reason why he found himself in the predicament he’s in.

Is there a world in which Gabi is willing to forgive Lena for what transpired this season? She does recognize that Lena was Sir’s first victim, so they have that in common. Or does Gabi just want to put this chapter behind her? Gabi can empathize. She sees Lena as the victim she was, even if Lena can’t see herself that way. But Gabi gave her a choice, and Lena chose to run out the door and try and shoot her. You can only help someone so much if they’re not willing to help themselves. There’s not going to be any love lost. Gabi believes in survivors. She believes in helping victims. She believes in saving lives and giving them a chance, but they have to want their life to be saved.

Is there a chance that Jamie could join M&A? I imagine he’s not too interested in going back to college after the journey he had this season. Jamie is finally home and committed to reintegrating into his family and making that work in whatever way that looks like. M&A definitely has a special place in his heart. If it’s somewhere that he feels he needs to continue to be anchored to, or for part of his growth and healing, it is not something that Gabi would deny him.

What was on your bucket list to explore in Season 3?One of the things that’s built into the fabric of the show is really taking our time and giving each character space to explore their backstory and complete their healing journey. We’re sort of meeting them halfway through. Obviously, Gabi was a significant portion of Season 1 and then Season 2 was Lacey and Margaret. I [was] super excited to delve into Dahn and Zeke’s backstories, and Trent’s, because he definitely has one. The show continues to move forward because we’ve teased peeling back the layers on each of them. They are all owed their sort of moment in the sun for us to really delve into their backstory and really complete this picture of who they are and set them on that final leg of their healing journey.
