This Viral TikTok Hack Gave My Ponytail So Much Volume

OK, I know I'm about to sound annoying, but hear me out: I have super long hair, and I'm grateful for it. I love the way it looks cascading over my shoulders when I wear it down, but whenever it's thrown up into a ponytail (which is happening more and more often since the weather is heating up), I can't help but feel like it's lacking. When I throw my hair up into an elastic, volume is the first thing to go. So yeah, I basically avoid a high pony altogether. But instead of constantly tucking my hair into a bun, I thought to myself, there has to be another way.

Enter, a new viral TikTok hair hack that instantly caught my eye. One of my favorite hair accounts, Matthew Newman of @MattLovesHair, made a step-by-step tutorial that was too easy not to try. It's labeled as a trick for volumizing your pony - something that I'm always interested in as a Texas gal who grew up hearing, "The higher the hair, the closer to god." Here's what happened when I tried it.

This is what my regular high ponytail looks like without the hack. She's cute, she's chic, she's fun, but she's lacking some volume. To try the hack, you need two hair ties woven together so they create a double loop. Then, separate your hair into pigtails at your desired height. Tie one pigtail with one of the loops, leaving the other loop exposed.

Then, make the second pigtail and tie it into the remaining loop. Now, for the fun part. Reach between the two pigtails and pull both ponytails together as one. Then, pull them through and flip them over. This creates a sort of "bump it" effect since the ponytail can now rest on top of the two hair ties. The only problem I had with this hack is that my hair is a little thin for the full effect. When watching Newman tackle this look, I noticed his thick, luscious curls add volume and weight to his hair at the top.

Since my hair is thinner and naturally straight, I could see where I split the two pigtails underneath the ponytail. Once I fluffed it a little, I was able to cover it, but with that in mind, this hack would probably work even better for someone with thick hair. My hair is also freshly washed, so I think day-two hair, when roots are a little more greasy, could help serve this look a little better as well.
