In a stunning offseason move, longtime NFL head coach Bill Belichick found his way to college football by accepting the job at North Carolina. Now, he’s bringing a wave of coverage and attention to Chapel Hill and the ACC.
This week, the ACC Spring Meetings have been ongoing, and league commissioner Jim Phillips was asked about the impact of Belichick joining the college ranks within the ACC. It’s no secret that it is one of the major storylines in the country this season, and Phillips admitted ESPN came running to the ACC before the conference even approached them about more games featuring the Tar Heels.
“They ran to us before we could even run to them, talking about our partners at Disney,” Phillips admitted.
Phillips went on to describe Belichick’s arrival as a “great thing” for the ACC and college football as a whole:
“Listen, it’s a great thing for the league, it’s a great thing for North Carolina, and we’re all following just the massive coverage that Coach Belichick draws,” said Phillips. “I don’t know that he’s got a private moment to himself at all from what I can see and read and follow.
“I think it’s good, I think it’s good for our league, it’s certainly good for North Carolina. It’s good for college football; it draws more interest. It was enjoyable to have him here this week with our joint group.”
While the spotlight on Belichick is large, it is not always overly positive, including a recent on-field situation involving his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson. ESPN’s Pablo Torre even reported there was still a realistic possibility Belichick does not even make it in his post until Week 1 of the college football season.
Fortunately, Belichick tried to calm any fears during his appearance at the spring meetings. He insisted the situation with Hudson is “off to the side” and not impacting UNC football at all.
For now, Belichick’s time in Chapel Hill is still must-see TV, and it will be interesting to watch how the Tar Heels perform this fall.
