Managers With the Most FA Cup Wins

Pep Guardiola will be hoping to win the FA Cup for a third time as a manager following previous successes with Manchester City in 2019 and 2023. If he was to win his third trophy, where would that rank him among managers with the most FA Cup wins?

The 2025 FA Cup Final will be played between Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on 17 May, with Man City boss Pep Guardiola looking to secure his third FA Cup title at the club.

Should he manage that, he will join an illustrious list of only seven managers to win the FA Cup at least three times since the first edition in 1872.

Meanwhile, Oliver Glasner, who will be sitting in the Crystal Palace dugout, will be hoping to become the first Austrian to win the English FA Cup as a manager – potentially the 10th different nationality to coach a side to FA Cup glory.

Managers with the Most FA Cup Titles

    7 Wins: Arsène Wenger (1998, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2014, 2015, 2017)6 Wins: George Ramsay (1887, 1895, 1897, 1905, 1913, 1920)5 Wins: Alex Ferguson (1990, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2004)4 Wins: John Nicholson (1899, 1902, 1915, 1925)3 Wins: James Fielding (1884, 1885, 1886), Charles Foweraker (1923, 1926, 1929), Bill Nicholson (1961, 1962, 1967)

There’s little danger of Arsène Wenger’s record of seven FA Cup titles as a manager coming under threat any time soon, with Guardiola the only active manager to win the competition more than once.

Wenger won the FA Cup in his first full season as Arsenal boss, defeating Newcastle United 2-0 at the old Wembley Stadium thanks to goals from Marc Overmars and Nicolas Anelka. That trophy was part of a domestic double that season, with the Gunners winning the Premier League before their FA Cup success – their first English top-flight title in seven years.

The Frenchman’s second FA Cup triumph in 2001-02 also followed a Premier League title in the same season and began a successful period for the London club in the competition. Arsenal won the FA Cup in three out of four seasons between 2001-02 and 2004-05 after losing the first ever FA Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in 2000-01 against Liverpool.

Wenger and Arsenal had further successes against Hull City and Aston Villa in 2014 and 2015, before he surpassed George Ramsay’s record of six FA Cup wins as a manager thanks to victory over Chelsea at Wembley in the 2016-17 final.

Ramsay collected six FA Cup titles between 1887 and 1920, all with Aston Villa. The Scottish manager also won six league titles at the club, becoming the most decorated manager in English pre-war football. Ramsay would go on to lose his final FA Cup final as a manager however, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in 1924 before retiring two years later.

Another Scot, Alex Ferguson, has the third-most FA Cup titles as a manager, winning the competition five times with Manchester United. After winning four FA Cups in the 1990s and coming into the season as reigning champions, United infamously opted out of appearing in the 1999-00 FA Cup due to their commitments in the FIFA Club World Cup. They were the first ever FA Cup winners to not defend their title.

The last four FA Cup finals that Ferguson won at United saw them also keep a clean sheet in the final, with the last of those victories coming against Millwall. That was one of only two FA Cup finals in the Premier League era to involve a team outside the top flight.

Ferguson could have added another FA Cup trophy to his record had United not lost in a penalty shootout in the 2004-05 final in Cardiff against Arsenal. That was the first FA Cup final in history to be decided by a penalty shootout.

John Nicholson enjoyed success in four FA Cup finals between 1899 and 1925 as Sheffield United manager. Those remain the club’s only four FA Cup trophies. While technically not their ‘manager’ during his long 33-year association with the club, he was certainly in charge of the team during each of their successes before his untimely death in 1932 following an accident ahead of a game versus Aston Villa.

The only manager to win the FA Cup in three successive seasons is James Fielding, who did so in charge of Blackburn Rovers in 1883-84, 1884-85 and 1885-86. The first two titles came in finals against Scottish side Queen’s Park, who are still the only Scottish side to have played in an FA Cup final.
