India National Cricket Team batter Virat Kohli hogged the headlines after he announced his retirement through a social media post. The premier batter's decision came just ahead of the five-match Test series against England and also the new edition of the ICC World Test Championship.
Kohli, who is rated as one of the best players in Test cricket, bid adieu to his favourite format after the lean patch that he endured. For the last five years, he wasn't at his best as his average dropped big time and was reduced to 46 from over 50.
Virat Kohli's last Test came during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Sydney. He started the series on high as he slammed a magnificent century in Perth and, after that, managed just 90 runs in the rest of the series. But his lean patch surely can't define him as a player.

highlighted why Test cricket is special and talked about why only those with a story to tell succeed in Test cricket. It read:
"Test cricket is special because it is a narrative sport. So many variables - four innings, five days, twenty-two specialists, changing weather (sometimes several times a day), humidity in the air, the condition of the pitch, luck determined by a coin toss, and constantly evolving mental calculations.
"Although every sport reflects some aspect of life, but Test cricket is like literary novel - combining many different genres into one. That's why only those with a story to tell succeed in Test cricket. A story so long and deep that it doesn't care for the pitch conditions - grass, dry, home or away," read the part of the post Grover wrote.

Virat Kohli retired from Tests with 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 games. He also hit 30 Test tons and 31 fifties.
